My wife and I want to go to Europe this winter, we went to Nice and Menton for Festival last February and had a great time. Never been to Lyon but I hear the Festival of Lights is pretty remarkable. So am considering flying into Lyon, spending a few days, then taking train to Montreux, spend a couple nights there. Then the Golden Pass Express to Interlaken, an overnight, then a train to Bern for a couple nights there and fly home.
Alternative is fly into Vienna, spend 3 or 4 days there, then train to Salzburg, a couple nights there, then the scenic train route via Bischofshofen and Zell Am See to Innsbruck and stay there a couple three nights, then train to Munich and home.
We like trains. We are not really Christmas craft market people, we like the festivals and museums and architecture, fine food, and would like to see some of the alps. But with some arthritis not really into hiking anymore.
Any advice, preferences? Thanks!
