Vienna or Munich?

Hey all

Planning on spending 3 nights in a city after we leave Krakow for our Euro trip in summer of 2016.

I am trying to decide between Munich or Vienna. I have heard great things about Vienna. My big draw for Munich would be to see the Neushwanstein castle.

So, which one? And why?

Also, if you guys have OTHER city suggestions to spend 3 nights in post Krakow I am all ears.

Thanks!

I guess it would depend on your interests, but I would pick Vienna. Beautiful architecture all throughout the city, numerous museums and music venues, beautiful gardens throughout the area - I thought it was just lovely. When we visited both cities on our GAS tour in May, I felt like I was able to see most of what I wanted to see in Munich in our time there but wished I had more days in Vienna. Have a wonderful trip!

Not even close. Vienna. The "castle" is not worth it. Krakow is wonderful.

I also like Munich and Neuschwanstein castle, but prefer Vienna. You can't miss with the grand Hofburg and/or Schonbrunn Palaces. Museum-wise, Munich has good transportation museums but Vienna has more art.

I assume that you're also considering travel time and that you have not yet booked the flight from Munich to Greece that is mentioned in your longer plan document.

Thanks for the replies.

I haven't booked anything for my trip yet, and have made a bunch of changes based on the information I have received from you great people!

One of the things I am looking at doing is cutting Munich or Vienna to have more free days. Hence the question of which one!

Much as I like Munich, still it's provincial when compared to Vienna. I'd choose Vienna. If that is too far, then Budapest, which you can reach by night train, Krakow to Budapest direct.

I love'em both. I'd probably go for Vienna, however. I consider Vienna perhaps the most underrated large city in Europe. It's old Europe full of classy living, opera, world's best horses, palaces, and it is the Music City of Europe. Vienna's also quite a lively city for young people.
Munich is another very large city, but it also has great palaces. The big draw there are the beer halls and their Bohemian lifestyle.
Neuschwanstein was a big let down for us, and it's a couple of hours from Munich--down on the Austrian border.

Vienna in a heartbeat. Save Munchen and surroundings for another time.

My husband and I have started doing short trips to Europe. (We have young children we do not like to leave for long periods.) For our next trip, we are debating Munich versus Vienna and I was contemplating posting the same question. After looking at the travel guide's for both places it seemed like Vienna had more to offer. But I did not want to just count "three triangle" sights and make my decision. This post is very helpful.

Vienna is a fabulous city, lots to see and do, excellent metro and very walkable. I was there last August and Krakow (LOVED Poland!) this May, I think you're in for a wonderful trip!
