Vienna/Munich to Brussels

Hi,
I have a trip late this year (December) and will be flying into Vienna and returning to the states from Brussels. I'm still working on the details but I'm guessing we will spend at least a couple of nights in Vienna and work our way to Munich.

Any thoughts on the best way to get from Munich to Brussels? Fly? Train?

It looks like it is 6-7 hours via train. (I tried to do a "test" booking but the web site gave me an error. Maybe too far in advanced?)

Obviously the train is longer but with planes you have to get there early, deal with baggage (usually we are pretty light) and possible weather delays. I'm guessing flight time is about 90 minutes.

I guess we could also go from Munich to Frankfurt for a night and travel from there to Brussels (maybe do a day trip outside of Frankfurt while there).

(I've been to Germany/Belgium several times and this will be another chance to explore the Christmas markets and see Vienna for the first time.)
Thanks
Rich

Rich,

The shortest time I could find from Munich to Brussels were departures at 06:30 or 10:30, arriving Brussels Noord at 13:26 and 17:26 respectively (time 6H:56M, one change at Frankfurt). There are numerous other solutions on that route, with varying travel times and number of changes. The travel time from Frankfurt to Brussels on those trips is 2H:57M.

While the trip from Munich will take the better part of a day, seven hours is still not too bad for a train journey of that distance, especially as it only has one change. If you buy well in advance, you may be able to get some good prices on the tickets. If you want to buy in advance, try www.capitainetrain.com as they've been getting good ratings.

I briefly checked Brussels Air for flights and the prices for December were listed at about €650 PP. Flight time is 1H:20M. In the same situation, I'd just take the train.

Trains in Germany go on advance sale 92 days before the travel date. This is sometimes reduced in certain years for travel in mid-December, as that is when the timetables change each year.

Thanks for the info. Usually I don't start checking things so far in advanced but I had some issues with FF miles, hotel points, etc. getting devalued so I had to accelerate the planning.

I'll keep an eye on the schedules as the year goes on. Most likely I will go the train route since I think it is a bit easier albeit longer.

Thanks.
