When we are in Vienna, one of the excursions offered was a ride into slovokia. Would this be advisable or would it be better to enjoy a day in Vienna??
Loved Vienna, only had 3 days, cannot wait to return! I would say, stay there, plenty to do. Happy Travels!
Thanks guys...I do believe we will spend the day in Vienna. Any suggestions on best things to do there?
Hi, Where to...Bratislava (Preßburg)? No, I say stay and enjoy your time in Vienna, as recommended above.
I agree. If you only have one day, spend it in Vienna. Takes about an hour to get to Bratislava, so I wouldn't burn that time. There is plenty to do and see in Vienna's historic first district and it is all easily accessible on foot. Start with the cathedral. The Roman museum is often over-looked, but I think its a little gem. The Schatzkamer (treasury) in the Hofburg palace is pretty cool. Contains the order of the golden fleece, Charlemagne's crown, nails of the true cross (!), the spear of destiny, etc. Pretty cool if you are into that. The Franziskaner crypt has the remains of all the Habsburgs. Cool in a spooky sort of way. For lunch, there are many traditional restaurants offering Wienerschnitzl among other traditional favorites. I tend to take schnitzl for granted, but it is actually good. I also like the fiaker Gulasch. After lunch you can visit the kunsthistoriche museum, which is one of the great art museums of Europe. Certainly spend some time just wandering the narrow cobbled streets of the old town. Its fun to poke into antique shops. A walking tour might be worth the dime, because every street has a story. For music lovers there are several Mozart and Beethoven sites, not to mention the Opera house. Weather allowing, sit at an outdoor table along the Graben or in a little square. If its raining, try out a traditional coffee house. So much to do! So little time! Enjoy your visit. I love this city.
The village of Grinzing is a great place for a meal when you are in Vienna. You can get a tram up there if I remember rightly.
