my wife and i would like to spend 2 nights in the vienna countryside (we will already have stayed in vienna central for 3 nights) before departing to the USA on May 4th. (so, we will need to be within an hour to the airport by public transport),
any recommendations would be appreciated!

What makes it difficult to answer your query is your requirement to be within an hour of the Vienna airport by public transport. Melk does not quite fulfill that requirement but may be your best bet, but you would need somewhat more time as it is about an hour by train from Vienna.

The beauty of Vienna is that you really do not have to leave Vienna to get out in the country. If you take the 39A bus out to its end in the former village of Sievering, you are there. If you stay at Hotel-Gasthof "Zur Agnes" (3 star), you will have the Vienna woods out your back door with miles and miles of hiking. Extensive vineyards are also a 1 minute walk away and there are numerous quaint Heurigers to choose from for dining and sampling the local wine. I am lucky enough to live in Sievering, and every weekend is like a weekend in the country. Downtown is about a half hour away on public. Checkout Hotel-Gasthous "Zur Agnes" at http://www.hotel-agnes.at Another option within an hour of the Airport is the wine village of Gumpoldskirchen, which is quite cute and located between Vienna and Baden. I like Gumpoldskirchen for its old Roman mile marker and its church that was built by the Teutonic Knights and is still run by that order (Deutsche Orden). Cool. Best of luck!
