Has anyone had issues with Victorinox CH97 22 wheeled backpack not accepted by US carriers for carryon? Althought I've seen the Q&As about wheeled backpacks, I haven't come across this and I am asking because, although it states that it is US carryon size (14x9x22) it measures larger. I just purchased one at a great price for upcoming trip to Italy but don't want to get stopped at the gate because it is too big and have to check it. We are using a US carrier to and from, but I really want the backpack option for train travel within Italy. It feels nice, but I have time to get something else if people have had issues with using it. I truly appreciate the feedback!
I haven't used it, but if it measures larger than 22" you most likely will have trouble taking it as a carryon. If it doesn't look crammed full, or you can squish it down, you might get by with it. It is all going to depend on the person at the gate.
I was in a local luggage store a few weeks ago looking for a shoulder strap and happened to see that bag . Like everything Swiss , it's beautifully made and really rugged looking . After trying to lift it ( empty ) and almost sustaining a double hernia , My wife and I shook our heads . The bag alone weighs in at about 13 lbs . My bag fully packed for a two month trip weighs in at twelve lbs. Price notwithstanding , do you really want to hump that kind of weight around ? I implore you , give it a second thought !! EDIT : Sorry that 's the shipping weight , it's about 9 lbs , but even so !!
I see two different versions of the CH-97 2.0 series Victorinox bag in the 22 inch size. One has a monopole handle ( which I love on my Victorinox bag) and others have a standard double handle. Also reported weight varies from 7.2 to 8.4 pounds! Which handle does your have? What is the measurement you are concerned about? Which airline are you flying? I personally do not worry that much about bag weight, even tho I am petite (5'2") and not young. I like my heavier Victorinox bag so much better than my lightweight RS wheeled bag--- it is so easy to pull even on rough sidewalks. And although it has backpack straps, I have yet to use them. I guess if we had a fifth-floor room with stairs, I might pull them out, but that hasn't happened yet.
Pack it full, then walk around with it on your back. I use a backpack exclusively for international travel, and the only hybrid wheeled backpack I've ever owned had me in sudden AGONY at 30 second mark; I nearly knocked 2 people over at the airport trying to get the thing off :-( I thought it would be nice to have the option to roll it sometimes, but the best I could manage with it was to carry it slung over one shoulder...and that was far from optimal. I really wanted a backpack/sometimes rolling bag, whereas perhaps you want a rolling bag/sometimes backpack? You'll just have to try it out and see how it actually works for you. FWIW, I've carried the RS 21" bag (actually, at least 22") for years on AA MD-80 aircraft with No Problem Whatsoever fitting it in the bins; several others on the Helpline have used that bag (and several other bags) as a carry-on bag to Europe - hopefully they can share their experiences with a 22"+ bag fitting in an international-type aircraft, and on different airlines. I am concerned about the empty weight, if it's on the heavier end; those ounces add up!
Appreciate all the responses! To the questions...yes, it's the monopole with the straps to convert to backpack and stated empty weight is under 8 lbs.I am not at all worried about weight..I frequently wear a leather backpack loaded with books, computers, etc. we are flying usair so do not have to worry about the EU carriers which restrict to a smaller size. While all product descriptions note the bag at 14x9x22 and as carryon, the tag on the piece itself notes the same dimensions and then has in small print that the dimensions were approximate. This intrigued me so I measured and it is just about 3" more overall, with about 1.5 inches extra at length. I know this seems overkill, but I have been flying carryon only for about 20 years (including scuba gear back in the day) and don't want this new case to end up checked.
