As Memorial Day is upon us , and many of us have visited Normandy and other areas of war ravaged Europe , this story by Paul Gallico is a fitting remembrance . Set in France and Belgium , in the twilight months of World War II , Verna Vane is a young woman with dreams of a show business career . She doesn't sing or dance very well , but manages to land a job in a small USO troupe . The story is beautifully played by Sissy Spacek , Howard Da Silva , Sally Kellerman , and William Hurt . Wow, thank you, steven! And June 6, the 76th anniversary of D-Day, is just around the corner. Getting into France became a lot easier after that landing campaign, and will hopefully, safely be again.
