Venice to Vienna - where in between?

Hi,

I am in the middle of planning part of my solo trip and I was planning on going to Munich from Venice but I just realised it will be during Oktoberfest and accomodation seems quite expensive now.

Can anybody recommend an alternative place to go to on the way to Vienna?

Or maybe even another destination along the way? I've currently got Venice, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris, spending 3 days in all except Berlin and Paris, which is 4 days.

Main interests are nature, architecture and culture. Originally wanted to go to Munich to do a day trip to Neuschwanstein castle.

Take the ferry to Piran and spend a few days there. Get up to Ljubljana where you can get on a train to Vienna.

There is enough to do in northern Italy, e.g. Padua, Vicenza, and Verona. Then go north east to Trieste, then to Ljubliana, Maribor, Graz and end up in Vienna.
