Venice to limit size of tour groups (+other restrictions)

From NPR:
Venice, Italy, will limit the size of tour groups and take other measures beginning this summer to soften the impact of tourism on the local community.

The new municipal resolution will cap tour groups at 25 people — or roughly half of the passengers on a standard tour bus — and ban loudspeakers that "may cause confusion and disturbance," the city said in a statement.

Set to take effect on June 1, the new rules will apply to both the historic center of Venice as well as the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello.

In my opinion, it is about time... I love the crowds in Venice, that is part of the attraction however large tour groups barrelling down the narrow lanes is annoying Get out of the way or be pushed out of the way.

I wonder how RS will handle the new Venice rule since his tours usually have 28 members.

Pretty sure he'll just cut the max down to 25 for tours that go to Venice. That's not a horribly big reduction for him. They'll deal with it.
May have to raise the cost of those tours by a couple of hundred $$ each, but people will pay it.

The devil's in the details. How will they enforce this? A group of 26 can be broken into two and stay separated while in the core tourist areas of Venice.

About damn time. I expect this trend to accelerate to many more popular destinations. Good news!

Stan, just a guess but I suppose they'll need officials or police of some sort to check the buses and so forth for numbers, and then fine the company if over 25?

Splitting a large bus into 2 or more groups would meet the requirements as they would function as separate tours. I have been part of this plan on several tours, including RS tours, where the day's/morning's activity can not handle the full tour group.

I pointed out in another thread, when Venice pronounces they are going to do something, the end result is usually watered down some by the time it is enforced, and the list of loopholes is long. No real details have been released, and as they say, the devil is in the details. I can't imagine them standing around counting people, more going after the obvious group of 50 or 60 rather than hassling a group of 27.

The loudspeaker seem to be more of an issue. Heck, with the headsets, you can disperse a fairly large group about an area, maybe train the groups not to herd so much.

BMWBGV, no buses can get Into Venice. VFR tour starts in Venice for one thing, so people dont gather for a head count until the tour starts moving en masse on the street. But thats why the detailed language in the rules is important to know. Special tourist police?

Charleston, SC did this several years ago. Walking tours were limited to a certain number.
2 advantages:
Other pedestrians can get around the groups easier.
Everyone in the tour group can hear the guide and see the site easier.
