VAT Tax Refund

hello, can someone please assist me.

I purchased a designer hand bag in Italy a few days ago. I have all the forms to bring to the VAT office at the airport. I have never done this before so wanted to ensure i do this correctly.

I have a 6am flight in the morning from rome to Munich, Germany. And then a 90 minute layover and then fly from germnay to NJ.

When do I go about getting the forms filled out? At what airport? I read mixed reviews.

Someone else that has done it recently will likely chime in, but I believe you would find the desk in Munich, the airport that you are leaving the EU from. It is possible that you can do it in Rome, showing a Ticket to the US. If you are at the airport in plenty of time, I would at least try.

Michelle,

I'm sure you were told in advance to not use the purse and make sure you're able to show it (with the original store/designer tag.)

https://www.globalblue.com/tax-free-shopping/italy/rome-fiumicino-terminal-31 (Unfortunately, they open at 7:00 AM daily). There may be other options to help within the above link.

Two years ago, I did that in Rome/FCO. Are you flying from FCO? I got directions to the "VAT" window (Global Blue) - it's not a short walk. If I recall correctly, it's near Customs. At the time (of day), there were two representatives. I gave her all the appropriate, already filled-out forms, my PP, showed my ticket, and she processed the credit card refund. It took just a few minutes.

But, even though there was no line and two reps, it could be different at your time of travel. Besides, I always have a layover of about 2-1/2 to 3 hours.

It should be at the airport from which you are leaving the Schengen Zone - in this case Munich.

Thank you for responses.

I am flying out of FCO TO MUNICH, then from Munich to New Jersey. My flight out of Rome board at 5:30, how do I check to see if it is open when i am there. My flight is out of terminal 1- I read that they have the customs there.

I found this excerpt from the link I will post below:

Premier Tax-Free- Tax-free Form

Reise Bank the refund point for premier tax-free in Germany.
Refund are processed within 30 days upon receiving your original export-validated Tax-Free form
For the credit card procedures in place by credit card companies, refunds generally appear on your bank statement in the month following the transfer of your refund amount from Premier Tax-Free to your bank.
Getting the cashback will be easier and faster with Premier Tax-free, than waiting for the money to credit back to your credit card

https://www.gojiakhong.com/help-tax-refund-germany-munich-airport/ < This seems to be step-by-step instructions for obtaining the different refunds. Please read all of course. The part about "Premier Tax Free" is further down in the article.

The article is from 2018. I can't attest to its complete accuracy, but it reads as if it's precise and current info.

Good luck! :)

Oh wait Michelle.....I just re-read your OP. Did the designer store rep fill out the form for you? Did they give you two receipts? Or are you filling out the forms yourself?

The reason I ask is because when I bought some SS crosses and things, the lady at the store was so very nice.

She did all the prep work - filled out forms for me, attached appropriate receipt(s); gave me a copy, sealed the bags and told me what to do at FCO. But, I just went through Global Blue at FCO; so it may be different.

*I hand carried the valuables.

I want to hand carry as they are expensive. I am hoping I can do arbor fco as there is only an hour in between the flights at Germany.

The luxury retailer filed everything out for me, all i need is the stamp.

You will have to get the stamp in Germany because that is where you are leaving. The refund office should in the same area as you will go through exit immigration in Munich.

Oh yes, of course, Michelle, "hand carry those valuables."

I think the other poster was trying show you the differences - hence:

Hand baggage: Goods carried as hand baggage and Tax Free forms must be produced to Customs at the final transfer, the last point of departure before you leave the EU.

Hold baggage: If you are leaving from one EU airport but changing
flights (in transit) at another EU airport and the goods you are
exporting are checked through to your final destination outside the
EU, go to Customs at the country where you check-in your bags, your
Tax Free form will be export-validated as if that were your last EU
departure point.

If you collect your bags in-between transit, then you must go to
Customs at your last point of departure in the EU where you finally
check-in your bags.

I know, lol, if you're not used to this or are new, as you mentioned, it can be confusing!
