we are traveling for 30 days in Europe. All hotels have added the VAT to our room rate. Can we get a refund on this tax the same way we do other purchases?
I am pretty sure you can only get VAT refunds for purchases of items/souvenirs (not servicesie, hotels, car rental, etc) and then only if the shop you buy it from participates in the VAT refund program. Also, I am pretty sure on the items you can't claim the VAT if you 1.use the item prior to leaving Europe and 2. if it crosses into other countries borders. I know the Rick Steves Ireland book addresses this, so if you have a Rick Steves book of any kind, I'm sure it's in there. I've never personally done this, usually because it's too much trouble or I tend to purchase smaller souvenirs. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me!
No refund ever of VATs on food, lodging, etc. Only refund on items taken out of the country. Then certain procedures and documentations must be completed.
No VAT refund for services received - hotels are services received.
Thanks for the good info. I won't count on that $
