I seldom see any posts about travelling in Europe in a campervan.
We did 7 weeks in UK/Ireland in a small van 2016 and planned a similar strategy for a 2020 Scotland trip until covid intervened.
Recently flew from Victoria to Western Australia and did 3 glorious weeks in a van around WA's beautiful SW. We spent a week last year zipping around some of Tasmania in one.
I wouldn't choose this method in continental Europe because we aren't familiar with driving on that side.
Any reasons for Americans not to go this method in Europe?
We wouldn’t choose this method in Europe, vanning, for several reasons. We have European friends who own nice camping vans and use them for extensive trips to lovely campgrounds in small villages, seaside and lake locations, etc. When we travel to Europe we tend to stay in medium to large sized cities to see the cultural and historic sites. Having a van in city locations would be a hindrance. Also public transportation is so efficient and plentiful on much of continental Europe that relying on personal transportation between cities isn’t necessary. It seems to be more necessary in places like vast swatches of the US, Canada, Australia, etc. If a visitor wants to see Europe from a vanning perspective it does have merit but it is a different type of holiday than most none residents experience. You’d certainly meet lots of locals and have interesting interactions.
I have a caravan in the U.K. and take it over to mainland Europe every year this year was 7 weeks in western France. I hired a motor home for 3+ weeks in WA a few years ago.
Most Americans on this forum tend to all do the same thing and go to the places that RS recommends in the books, so cities using public transport. I travel differently - generally longer trips, staying in towns and villages, taking more luggage, hiring a car and less moving around. I have never had any issues driving on the wrong side of the road.
We are doing this next summer. It will be our 5th trip to Iceland and we have the campervan for 10 days to do the Westfjords. When we are done up there we will swap it for a small suv to do the Westmann islands and then Thorsmark. We backpack in the mountains here and occasionally car camp, so this will be more luxury than either of those😉
