Valuables when at beach

My husband and I are driving to Salema, Portugal this summer. We are planning to stay at a quarto. We are wondering if it is safe to leave valuables there and then go to the beach or if we need to carry passports, money and credit cards ON US even at the beach. I have been reading about cars being broken into...so am wondering if any of you have any good advice.

I would absolutely not take passports, etc., to the beach. Those things would be much safer where you are staying.

I go to Hawaii every other year or so,, and although I know its not Europe, it is a foreign country to me, and I do bring my passport ,BUT , never to the beach .
We do always stay in hotels , so we always use hotel safe, I guess in a private rental accomadation that may not be an option,, in which case, we might bring it to the beach, BUT that would be either my hubby or I would have to be physically with the stuff( no swimming together for example) .

When I've been to the beach alone I also use one of the waterproof cases, but I would never put a credit card or passport in it (passport wouldn't fit anyway)--there is just too big a chance of it coming open or getting away from me. These are far safer in a hotel safe. Geez, these are far safer stashed anywhere in your lodging! I put in a driver's license and petty cash and that's it.

I agree a hotel safe would be best if one's available. This is sort of a tough one, though, because everyone has their own level of comfort with respect to security...I must say that I have always taken my money belt to the beach. My last beach visit in Europe was to Monterosso…I took the money belt with just enough Euro to rent lounge chairs and an umbrella with a little extra for drinks and snacks – maybe €30 total. Of course, my stuff included debit/credit cards and our passports. One of us is always in control of the money belt while at the beach…in front pocket of swim trunks. For me, it’s not unlike taking my wallet with me when we’re at the beach in LA or San Diego. I would never leave these things unattended anywhere, however. You just have to take turns going into the water. That’s just me…everyone’s different. Cheers!

There are a great number of waterproof cases that would hold your valuables and still allow you to swim etc.

they come in a variety of styles, sizes and prices. Ranging from hard cases to flexible bags. they can be attached to you through a lnayard or a wrist strap.

Just google waterproof passport cases.

I keep my important stuff with me EXCEPT when going to a beach or pool. When bathing or napping in the sun are potential activities, your valuables will be much safer somewhere else. You will have to decide the safest option available to you.

As always, bring some cash for a drink, snack or souvenir but don't bring the "spoilers" (things that might ruin your trip if you lost them).

The Splash Caddy is one example of a waterproof case.

I have been on trips to Hawaii by myself and when snorkeling I use a waterproof type case for the essentials (drivers license, credit card and a small bit of cash). I leave other important things that shouldn't get wet in the hotel safe. Worse case I lose the waterproof case - but I have the essentials at the hotel. VERY worse case, my essentials are stolen out of the safe, but at least I have a credit card to make do until I get things under control. This is also why it is good to have copies of your passport located deep in your luggage away from where you store your actual passport - for those "emergency" situations.

Thank you for the advice. We will not be staying at a hotel...but in a quarto..so there will be no safe. Should I hide my valuables in the room? I have traveled quite a bit and have always had access to a safe...but not this time.
