Viator is not a tour operator. They are only a middleman to set you up with the actual tour companies. Lately, the reviews of Viator around here have not been good. It's better to book your tours directly with the companies themselves.

I've used Viator for several years (including this past Fall). I've been happy with them. Was able to find the tour type/date/time I wanted and the tours I've taken were all "as advertised". If I did more research I'm sure I could come up with great tour companies that met my needs without a middleman like Viator and the extra fee that is built in. That said, I only take one or two tours on any vacation (and not usually even one) so I just would rather spend my time doing trip research, caging good flights yada yada. I do recommend a Vatican Museum tour that leaves you on the post security side of St. Peter's itself. Took a tour this past Fall that dropped us off in FRONT of St. Peter's after the museum. Yikes - 2 hour wait to get through security. Not a good deal to save $50 bucks or whatever it was. For me, time is money... Of course, as always, timing is everything. Winter wait lines are shorter (as are the days) and all that.

I've used Viator in Croatia in 2011 and had no problems on my two day tours (one was better than the other though, but that's normal). The price (about 70 Euros) was worthwhile for me because it was a full day trip. But, like always, if you want to spend time as you see fit, you need to stay away from tours and go at your own speed.

Booking a tour with a tour company is not the same as booking a tour with Viator. With all of the listings for tour companies, on the Graffiti Wall, in Ricks' books or on other travel forums like Trip Advisor, I still do not understand why people keep hanging on to Viator. They are NOT a tour company, they sell tours from other people. Going on a good tour can really enhance your experience in any city, and they are usually worth doing, rather than walking around on your own.

the thing is Viatour makes it easy to find tours, but as mentioned they are only reselling other companies tours. Most times things go well but when the don't it can be difficult as you are going through another party.. instead of dealing direct. I think you can use Viatour to find a tour ,, just go onsite,, see what they offer then google and find the company that offers it.. compare prices. I am not a huge tour fan, but I have used them in various cities for some things, and I have always booked direct.. but I am willing to spend the time to double check reviews etc..
