Using the Web to find flats/apartments for a London trip

I have found a number of websites offering London flats for short-term lease. How do I really know that these web sites are legimate businesses, and not just scams? Is there any way to check out these rental agencies? Has anyone tried booking a place using any of these smaller agencies? The prices are (sometimes) so much cheaper than booking a hotel. And we can save a bit of money if we eat in some of the time. Thanks.

If you are concerned about being scammed, why not rent an apartment from a place like Citadines which is established and has a secure server to process card transactions?

Or try housing affiliated with a university. Ex. London School of Economics has properties all over the city - apartments, studios, even standard ensuite rooms that have access to a simple shared kitchen if all you are looking for is to cook a few simple meals once in awhile.

I had good luck with VRBO.com. They list apartments around the world, all rented out by the owners.

I have also had good luck with VRBO, renting nice places in Paris and Cortona, and they have an extensive selection all over the world. I read the write up and contact the owner, and if they seem responsible and cooperative, I go for it!

I've used homeaway.com here in the states and it has been reliable.

Hello Barbara,

I would suggest looking at the Tripadvisor London Forum. It's quite an active forum and there is a "sticky" which outlines the do's and don'ts of apartment rentals - very helpful. On the forum you will find lots of information on renting apartments as well as reviews of the various companies.
