One can get a calling plan from AT&T for emergencies and minimal use. However, the data plan for Internet use is really high. Don't Skype calls incur high data charges?
If you're using the cellular data network (3G or otherwise), then yes. (Earlier, I calculated an estimate of $7.50/min.) However, if you're using WiFi, there is no additional charge, so Skype-to-Skype is free and SkypeOut is a few cents per minute.
So, do you try to find a Starbucks or other place with wi-fi to place the call? Sorry for seeming dense.
From what I've read there is wifi all over the place..
I believe mcdonalds has it as well.
Thanks, Paul and Jody.
I think most hotels/hostels these days offer free Wifi, so at the very least you should be able to make phone calls and use the internet for things you need before you head out for the day.
You can also download a free Wifi finder app, and when you find yourself in a Wifi area, use it to find other free hotspots to use throughout the day. That's what I plan to do on my trip in a couple of months.
Thank you, Anna. I did not know about the app.
I agree with Paul. We've been using Skype with Wi Fi for a month now in Europe with no problems. A $10 load accounts for a lot of minutes at around 2 to 3 cents a minute. We're using Skype with an iPhone too.
