Depending on where you are going, train schedule aps and public transit aps are handy.

I have translators, maps, flight apps, dining apps, metro apps....... But I have discovered that I have a much better time if I leave my phone off and look up instead of down.......

if you are going to rely on wifi then take the time to download the parts of google translator and maps so you can use them off-line. assuming you haven't done this already.
the 'word lens' feature, that is part of translator now, is very handy for converting menus etc.
Viber is very handy if you need to talk/message to friends back home etc on wifi.

oh and the rick steves europe app, great free city tours. we like them very much.

hope this helps.

whatsapp - it's a great way to text without incurring charges. Anyone you text using it needs to also have the app on their phone. It's one of the most popular apps worldwide and works like a charm.

For keeping track of the details I use TripIt - just forward confirmations to the app & it puts them them in an easy to use format. You can other details manually so you have a schedule at a glance.

"I can think of google translator...." Don't be surprised if the translation is inaccurate or incorrect, just depends. True, I'm giving you third hand info but that's what I've been told. I myself have never experienced it since I don't use that "stuff"...wouldn't know how anyway.

We found Maps.Me very helpful. You can download maps of the areas you will be visiting and then access them without needing WiFi or using data. I liked it because it includes the rural areas and small towns. It's not limited to just the bigger cities.

Just a hint when using any translation program. KISS! Use short sentences and try to avoid using idiomatic phrases. You'll get a more accurate translation. Think like a first grader!

HERE maps. I load up restaurants, museums, cafes, etc. in my browser at home, then sync them to my phone and have off-line GPS directing me around town when I arrive. Magic!
