When returning from an international trip, we mistakenly entered the regular immigration line instead of the Global Entry line. No one was in front of us and we waltzed to the counters with a sole employee there to direct traffic. We then realized we passed the Global Entry kiosks. The employee emplained we needed to visit the Global Entry kiosks to gain the required Global Entry receipts. There was no one in front of us and staff at the regular immigration counters were waiting for passengers. I asked about just visiting a regular immigration person. Yes we could do so, but it takes more time she said with a *issy tone. OK with me. Went to a regular counter, facial recognition used and asked if anything to declare. Nope. Move on. Slick.

Sure, if there's a line. But not if there's no line, as per your experience. I wonder, did she not feel like doing any work at that moment?

I believe that you will find the staff in situations like this have canned, practiced responses to most questions, and when you ask one of those questions, you will get that canned answer, regardless of circumstances. If you're not the only one there, the canned answer that was given is probably correct.
Not sure you really have much to complain about here.
America and Russia compete to see whose customs and immigration officers have the most *issy tone.

Unfortunately, in my experiences, US wins this one every time.
