New Version of Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) starts today

I just received an email from the STEP program, with the following info. I had already entered my trip for next year in it, but had to sign in again using the login.gov ID and reenter everything, as the old info was not saved. I will say it is a WHOLE lot easier to do it this way. Entering info into the STEP program used to be very cumbersome. So just an FYI, you should have gotten an email about the new version, but if not, I would suggest going there and following the new directions.

Event: On September 16, 2024, the Department of State launched a new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Re-enroll in the new system at step.state.gov to continue receiving alert. The new STEP platform allows you to use a login.gov account to customize your subscriptions and receive country-specific email alerts during the timeframe of your choice. You can enroll multiple trips or locations at once and can modify your subscriptions or unenroll at any time.

Actions to Take: Visit step.state.gov to enroll in the updated STEP to set your preferences and continue receiving alerts and messages from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Enrolling in STEP makes it easier for the nearest U.S embassy or consulate to contact you during an emergency and send you safety and security alerts. We strongly encourage all U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to enroll or re-enroll today to take advantage of new functionality. Encourage friends and family traveling or living internationally to enroll in STEP. Travelers may choose to sign up for alerts for individual trips or to receive alerts long-term for specific countries where they or their loved ones are visiting or residing.

Thank you for the info - I didn't get an email but I don't have any upcoming travel entered in their system.

Glad to hear they made it easier! I hate doing my long, multi-country trips.

Funny timing. All of my enrollments have expired and this weekend I was thinking I'd wait a while to put the new ones in. Good to know that I had better allow time for the re-registration, and perhaps the data entry will be easier. (I don't recall it being overly time consuming, so I'll be interested to see what clever things they've done.)

CW, I found the text very small before, and it was always a bit painstaking to get the info in. This new version is really nice, with easy to follow directions, larger text and the ability to sign in with login.gov. I use that to log into SSA and other government sites, so it's nice to be able to use it here.

CL, I'm thinking they sent the email just to those who had trips in the system.

Laurel, yes, it was a pain before!

Mardee thanks for this. I did not get an email.

Can anyone see where you can add people that are traveling with you, or do they each need their own profile now? I used to just add my husband to mine.

Mary, I noticed that, too, as I could not add my two grandkids to it. I would imagine maybe it's because of the new secure login? I figured I would just add each of them separately.

Phew! Done. And he now has his own account. He wandered in from a work meeting to ask "Why do I have 15 emails from the government?!"

Thanks for the heads up, Mardee! I didn’t get an email but have a trip coming up soon. I’ll check out the new version of STEP right away to re-enter info for the trip.

I don’t remember getting an email. I have several alerts on the flooding in Poland the last few days. Maybe I won’t be getting them now? Time will tell.

Hi guys, please excuse my ignorance on the matter, but why would I want to register for this if , say, I’m just traveling to Italy or France, etc. What are the benefits? Thanks for educating me!

STEP is simply a way for the State Department to notify you and to have a rough idea of your whereabouts in case of an emergency -- tsunamis, hurricanes, volcanoes, terrorist attacks, and such. I have heard of the State Department going to great lengths to extract Americans registered with STEP after the 2011 tsunami in Japan, for example.

Honestly, I wasn't impressed when I was in Egypt at the beginning of Covid. They didn't notify us about the airports shutting down until two or three weeks after the shutdown, long after we had gotten out of the country and returned home.

It's probably not as important to register with STEP for a trip to Italy or France as for some other countries, but I still register just in case. One never knows what could happen, and registering only takes a few minutes.

Unlike Marie, I have had good experiences being notified via STEP - both ahead of travel (e.g. warnings about scheduled protests or other significant events, changes in travel advisory level) as well as while I was traveling. It was very helpful getting information ahead of a trip to Thailand where there was significant civil unrest, and while I was a bomb was detonated at a protest (it turned out to be all ok). Last year while I was in Turkey there was another incident at the embassy in Ankara just after we visited there on our tour. The information was sent out within a couple hours of the incident. Again, I wasn't in harms way but it was very helpful to know what was going on.

Terrorism and acts of nature occur in every country on the planet, even "safe" places like Italy and France. The few minutes it takes to sign up is worth it to me to make sure my whereabouts are known in the event my personal safety becomes a concern. I consider it a supplement to my travel insurance.

Thanks, Mardee, for the heads up. I have used STEP since my first solo trip to Europe many years ago. I’ve logged in with my login.gov ID now and will be ready to hopefully add a trip to France next year.

I've been using STEP since 2010 and have found it very helpful; however, I used to have a record of all my travels that were helpful when applying for VISAs that needed travel history. Now all those entries appear to be inaccessible. Any ideas?

rjgangwish, I checked and yes, the older plans are gone. i would imagine that when they switched over, it would have been expensive and cumbersome to change the old plans to the new interface.

If you need records of past travel in the future, I would suggest saving everything on your own computer in a database like Google or Dropbox, etc. I never count on a 3rd party website to save my information, as too many things can happen and they disappear.
