Just the other day I was chekcing on my flights for next week and noticed that my flights in November had changed (AA commonly lags on sending that email.) My nonstop JFK-MAD was canceled and I was rerouted through Miami. It would have meant leaving JFK 8 hours earlier, which also presented a traffic challenge—not ideal, but wouldn't have been a tragedy.
However, I looked at other options knowing that all OneWorld routings were now possible for me. I reached out to AA via their app chat (no hold time!) and was promptly rebooked as requested, onto Iberia's non-stop from JFK, just a couple of hours earlier than my original flight.
