Unique tours / attractions / activities ?

This question is inspired by a post from James E. in the Hungary forum about some adventure activities in Budapest.

I will be visiting the following cities (Barcelona, Budapest, Vienna, Prague, Krakow, Bruge, London ) and was hoping for some suggestions for something different than the usual sightseeing. We will be visiting in December for a month and so far I've just come up with the standard list of attractions (museums, churches, famous buildings and sights). What I'd like to find is something a little bit unique that will give us a bit of variety. I realise visiting in winter will restrict a lot of out door type activities but am still open to suggestions.

What are your interests and how long do you have in each place? It looks like allowing a days travel between places that you only have 3 days in each place if you are covering 7 places in a month. This is barely long enough to see the main sights!

Budapest - head to the Buda hills by bus, arriving at the southern end. Walk through the park northwards and take the chairlift (libego) back down. Great views down to the city. This takes half a day.

London - visit the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden.
Visit Walthamstow High Street for a typically British market.
Visit Columbia Road flower market (Sunday morning only) then have a curry in nearby Brick Lane.
Visit the London Wetlands Centre in Barnes.

Without knowing your interests, it is difficult to advise.

Do remember many places on your list will likely be cool and rainy.. possibly even a bit of wet snow..(likely not Barcelona.. but it won't be warm)
Is this list firm?
Honestly I would cut Bruges ( in winter..not so nice to wander around ) and Barcelona ( since its the outilier in the group) as you seem to have more destinations than time, but then its just me.. remember.. two nights in any one place only equals one full day of sightseeing there.. so think about that..

In December just about all these cities will be in Christmas mode so there will be everything from Christmas Markets, fairs, parades, church services, concerts, ballets, performances of Messiah (particularly in England; also pantomimes there), street decorations, Christmas trees etc. Certainly a lot of different events from the rest of the year. Also probably some foods and drink special to this time of the year. Use Google to find out what is special in each city at Christmas....for instance I seem to recall sleigh rides through the streets of Prague.

Hi All,

Thanks for the info so far, will definitely be checking out some of those suggestions.

I've already booked all the flights/trains/accommodation so destinations are locked in (number of nights in each place below)

Barcelona (5)
Budapest (4)
Vienna (4)
Cesky Krumlov (1)
Prague (4)
Krakow (4)
Bruge (2)
London (6)

A couple of ideas I had- Maybe a segway tour somewhere, Barcelona perhaps? I've never ridden one before. Would also like to find somewhere for a light hike out in the countryside that's within easy reach of the cities we're visiting, not sure if there will be anywhere suitable.

I plan on checking all the tourist event calendars for each city before we visit, which hopefully might provide some good info.

this is for Prague.this company does a sort of Secrets of Prague tour there are a couple but if you do a private tour Jason can organise them into one.
I have known Jason for many years and we met through Trip Advisor ,we meet whenever we are both in the city. last year when he first set up the tours he took myself and several friends on a mixed secrets tour which was fascinating, even my friend who was born and brought up in Prague was suprsied by many things he showed us and me as a person who has been visiting Prague for around 25 years was quite amazed at the little streets and courtyards he took us through ,all well away from the main tourist hoards.

If you're really lucky with the weather, the walks up on Montserrat outside Barcelona might suit you. Barcelona is where you'll likely have your mildest weather, but Montserrat is at altitude.

On its busiest days (perhaps not in December?) Barcelona's historic area can have many, many tourists and clogged sidewalks--enough that I'm not sure a Segway tour would be a great idea. Perhaps the operators know back-street routes that remain reliably clear. Or December might be just fine; I visited in August.

In Krakow, you can't beat the quirky of a Crazy Guides tour. Might be chilly riding in a Trabant in December, but the vodka will warm you up. They're irreverent in a good way and balanced out the serious/heavy tourist sites there.

In Budapest definitely go to the Szechenyi baths. They were fun in the spring, but my tour guide told us they're best appreciated in the depths of winter.

I did a Segway tour in Paris. It's fun and you cover a lot more ground than walking. They are becoming more and more popular, so check for them in each city. In December some of your cities will have Christmas markets filling up many of the streets and squares in the center so Segway tours may not be possible then.
