Underwire bras - no, I'm not kidding!

I just went onto the TSA website to check for no-no's and one of the clothing items they say can't be carried on board is an underwire bra. Not that I'm advertising here, but I can only wear underwire bras. Is TSA for real? I don't want to check in my bag going to Rome next week. Has anyone had a problem with this?

Sorry, men need not reply to this entry. Thanks.

I wear underwire bras too, and this year I have traveled to Italy, Denver, Seattle, and Las Vegas with them without a problem. I had no idea they were banned!

I can't even count the number of times I've both worn and carried on underwire bras in the past few years, both domestically and this summer from the US to London and also throughout Europe. If this is really true, I haven't experienced any enforcement!

Just when you think you've seen everything LOL. Good luck Karen and have a great trip!

Is this new stuff on TSA web site? When I checked back in August, I didn't see anything about underwire bras. It's crazy, since majority of the bras are made with wire now days.
I very rarely wera this type of bras, less when I fly, so I can't tell you if theys et the security thing off.

I just looked at the TSA website and didn't see ANY mention of underwire bras. In fact, I didn't see any listing for clothing at all. Are you sure you were checking the official TSA website, www.tsa.gov? Where on the site did you see this? They aren't listed in prohibited items.

This can't be true ... otherwise a very large portion of women would be forced to remove their bras at the security check-in. I've worn and carried on underwire bras dozens of times and have never had an issue. I've had to remove belts, shoes, jewelry, coats, and suit jackets, but it has stopped there :)

Below is the TSA website of prohibited items. It does not mention underwire bras.

OK, I see where you found this clothing list, but it's only a list of things that could set off the metal detector. These things are not prohibited, they are simply telling you that you might want to avoid wearing them through screening. But as the other women have said, underwire bras are not a problem. The list you should be concerned about is the list of prohibited items.

I think some underwire bras are made with non metal inserts, plasticy stuff I guess. I have worn an underwire bra and not "beeped " at the airport.

Karen, I also saw this mentioned on the TSA website about the possibility of underwire bras setting- off the metal detector. I assure you, I wore one as I too need the underwire support, and it did not set off the metal detectors during any of our security screenings on our recent trip to Europe. The list you saw was only applicable to metal detector screening, not to checked bags or carry-ons.

My advice is to wear it, pack it, and forget the metal detector, as it will not alarm when you pass through. Have a great trip!

May I butt in ? I have to declare an interest in the general area we are talking about.

It's absolutely true that in certain airports where the security scan machines are not calibrated correctly an underwire bra will activate the warning lights.

All that happens is that you will be wanded by a female member of security.

The worst place for this in England is East Midlands Airport, which just happens to be our nearest airport and my wife's underwire bra always sets the warning alerts off. Frankfurt is a pain for this as well and so is the new terminal 2 in Prague.

All it means is that they pass a wand over you. I don't know how this affects US airports but she didn't have a problem at JFK, ORD or DFW.

I've switched to the plastic-alternative bandings. It's a hassle to hold up a line so I just eliminate wearing metal wires altogether.

Prior to my trip I wasn't able to find plastic underwire bras. Do any of you know a brand, and where to purchase it? I'm surprised that the women's undergarment industry hasn't picked up on this yet.

Thank you everyone for the information. Since I Googled the website, I might have had an older page. I was glad to hear that my bra would beep the banner and not get bumped to be burned. My hippie days are quite behind me. So, thank you both, dear ladies and my bra, for the support.
And Al, since I live in the San Francisco area, I'm glad it was your wife's undergarment that did the beeping and not your own. =0 Good Cheer to you both.

Happy and Safe Travels Everyone!
