Ukraine -- what does it cost?

Is it expensive to travel in Ukraine from a North American perspective? Where can I get Ukrainian money in Europe? With the unrest, is it most safe to go to Livi?
Thank you.

The Ukrainian hryvnya is divided into 100 kopecks. Coins come in
denominations of one, five, 10, 25 and 50 kopecks, plus the rare one
hryvnya. Notes come in one, two, five, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500
hryvnya. Kopecks have become virtually worthless and prices are often
rounded up or down. There is a chronic shortage of change throughout
the country – try to give the correct money whenever you can. In
Russian-speaking regions people may still quote prices in roubles
instead of hryvnya from force of habit. It’s virtually impossible to
buy any hryvnya before you get to Ukraine.

U.S. citizens are urged to follow the guidance in the Travel Warning
for Ukraine and defer all travel to the Crimean Peninsula at this
time. In March 2014, Russia occupied the Crimean Peninsula, which
remains part of Ukraine notwithstanding Russia’s illegal military
intervention.

One of the couples that comes to our Moscow, Idaho Rick Steves travel meet-up is currently in Lviv and will be home mid-May.

When are you planning to travel?

editing: I see on your other thread you plan to travel this summer so Monte will be back by then with a up-to-date view on traveling Western Ukraine.

Tanya, Rick does not monitor this site. Some of his staff do (clearly noted that they are staff members). The rest of us are just volunteers and love to travel. I will message Monte as I think he will be back around the 15th.

I would be interested in hearing about the trip too. We are going fishing in the western Ukraine this fall if we can get it organized in time.

I emailed them and Monte will post when they get back home. They are in Ivano-Frankivisk as of yesterday and had seen that the US is in Ukraine training Ukranian paratroopers.
