Ukraine - anyone been recently?

Hi there,

Ah too common safety question...I would not stop myself from going. But I am curious to see how recent travels were and how you felt if you went recently? Anyone been to Kiev or Lviv? Any other city recommandations?

I am going to Denmark and Sweden in the Fall and looking for a 3rd and 4th place to go to.
Ukraine is one of the few countries I have not been yet in Europe.

Thank you!

I don't have a lot of information but my daughter is there right now. She was in Kiev for a day because that's where she flew into and then she and a friend took the train to Dniepropetrovsk where her friend lives. She emailed me that she feels very safe in both places, no problems at all. I'm pretty sure that Lviv is also safe as the political issues never really affected the western part of the country like it did in the east. My daughter was actually living in Dniepropetrovsk when all the trouble was going on and at that time she felt a bit uncomfortable there but not now.

My aunt, who is 76, travels there twice a year to visit my cousins and has no problems. She travels by herself and is currently there now.

Thank you very much! Always nice to get a sence on what's going there at the moment since things always change.
I'm shopping for flights...Thanks again!

I have relatives there, Kiev and near Lviv. They say everything is fine. There is a young woman we met while there in 2010, she's from near Lviv but is going to school in Kharkov, which is in the east, she says she's had no problems.

I was in Ukraine in May 2015. I still have yet to write my travel report -- oops. We flew into Kyiv and took a train onto Lviv and then another train to the Hungarian border and on to Budapest. Both cities were quite safe and interesting to explore. Western Ukraine is safe, but avoid going east into the Donetsk, Lugansk, and Crimea regions. While I didn't go there myself, I know some who have enjoyed Odessa.

The biggest barrier was language. There are only a few who speak English. If you know Russian and/or can somewhat read cyrillic, you'll be able to get by.

War is in the eastern part of Ukraine. No one will let you go there even if you want - it's dangerous. There are special control places where they check a permit to enter the territory of antiterrorist operation.
All other cities are safe. Enjoy!

clara78, when you went to Ukraine did you go as far east as Kyiv? did you go to the coast? do the Russians still hold the oil derricks off the coast of Odessa? do you think Putin's New Year speech where he discussed incorporating not only the east but a all of the costal areas into Russia was just empty rhetoric - nothing to worry about? thanks for the input.
