  1. Is the itinerary doable? The itinerary covers mostly cities. I would love to travel to outskirt of Ireland and Scotland by a road trip. However as I do not prefer driving alone, I could only visit the places reachable by train/bus. Do you have any recommendations?
  2. I have researched that in order to enter St Petersburg without a visa, one needs to board the St Peter line. Is it worth the time and money to travel from Helsinki-St Petersburg-Helsinki ?
  3. Shall I travel by train or flight to Netherlands? I surveyed that one can reach by Copenhagen-Hamburg-Osnabrück-Amsterdam train. Or do you suggest a direct flight and skip Germany?
  4. Do you recommend to get a Eurail Scandinavia pass? Could the pass be used when traveling on Norwegian trains between Oslo and Bergen, Myrdal, or Voss (Norway in a nutshell) ?
  5. I could not find a single Eurail pass that covers Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Ireland. Shall I use local & regional train instead? I would like to have some flexibility.

Thank you for your opinion/ suggestions in advanced.

Cheers,
Natasya

  • It looks like you have 4 full days in Bergen...way too much. The town itself is worth maybe a full day but there isn't that much to see and do. Are you also venturing out of town to some of the fjords or historic houses?
  • July 15 - 29 seems really rushed with too little time in each place. I think you're moving around too much to see anything well. Maybe focusing this portion of your tip on fewer destinations would be prudent. I would cut out the Cotswolds and Glasgow and add a day to London and also to either the Lake District or Edinburgh.
  • Train passes are usually not the cheapest option...usually point-to-point tickets are better if purchased well in advance. To know for sure you should price it out to see which is the best.

Yes, with 16 days for Norway (as beautiful as it may be), and only 15 days for England.Scotland and Ireland, your schedule does seem a little lopsided. Have you considered the necessities of a Russian Visa for St Petersburg?

  • Eurail passes don't cover the UK, which has its own selection of separate BritRail passes. The Eurostar train to/from London doesn't accept any rail pass.
  • A Eurail Global pass does cover trains in Ireland and the rest, but I wouldn't consider it for this trip.
  • The Eurail Scandinavia pass is much cheaper, especially since it allows travelers of any age to choose 2nd class. It covers the Bergen-Myrdal-Oslo line, and gives you a small discount between Myrdal and Flam, but doesn't cover bus or ferry in that area.
  • Yes, I would fly from Copenhagen to Amsterdam, if the German stops are not key to the trip, and add that time elsewhere. Try www.skyscanner.com for flights within Europe.

It is interesting to note the 72 hour visa free entry to St Petersburg on the St Peter Line.
Obviously you need to purchase return ferry, hotel and tour package.

I would start in Copenhagen, fly to Helsinki (for St Petersburg), then work my way back through Finland and Sweden to Norway, before flying from Bergen to Amsterdam.

1-Jun Copenhagen
4-Jun (Fly to) Helsinki
7-Jun (Ferry to) St Petersburg
11-Jun (Ferry to) Helsinki
12-Jun Turku
13-Jun Stockholm
16-Jun Oslo
19-Jun Fjords (Sirdalen, Tjeragbolten, Rjukan, Fjaerland, Geiranger)
26-Jun Bergen
29-Jun (Fly to) Amsterdam
04-Jul Rotterdam
06-Jul Ghent (Bruges, Brussels, Antwerp)
10-Jul London
14-Jul Cotswolds
17-Jul Liverpool
19-Jul Lake District
22-Jul Edinburgh
26-Jul (Fly to) Dublin

Yes it is worth the time and money to take the St Peter line ferry to St Petersburg. It's a beautiful city and the opportunity to visit it without the bureaucratic red tape and cost (about $250 I believe) of obtaining a Russian visa is well worth it.
