Any suggestions on the best turn-by-turn nav program for an ipad in France/Belgium? Do not want to bring a separate nav device, but have never tried using ipad as a nav device.
I would assume that if you are using an IPAD as a GPS, you have one with a cellular feature. If yes, it's most likely AT&T or Verizon. If yes, you will be in roaming mode while in Europe and you will need to be sitting down when you see your roaming charges. It's not cheap. Simply buy a nice Tom Tom or Garmin GPS with European maps. They are indispensable. We had a Garmin Nuvi for our 2000km tour of France last year. It worked great.
Rene, As the previous reply mentioned, you'll need to look at the issue of cellular data roaming first. You may find that an inexpensive GPS unit may be cheaper than using your iPad. It would help to know which cell network you're using with your iPad in the U.S.? Cheers!
There is another way around that: buy yourself a TomTom iPad/iPhone app for € 50 or so (for all Western Europe). Then, you can use it as a GPS unit without any cellular data traffic (you can even disable "roaming data" or what else on the iPad), because the app (which is like 2GB large) contains ALL maps on itself (offline), meaning they don't need to access the Internet to download maps or what else.
