After searching the internet for Turkish & Greek music to use for a slideshow of my recent trip and finding nothing I liked, I decided to ask the wonderful array of people on this board who seem to know everything! My European film question has given me so many wonderful suggestions I will be busy for years. For my slideshow I want something that sounds Turkish, but maybe with a nice melody...also for the images of Greece, something that would be pleasant to listen to while looking at images....Thanks
(I already have music for my Vienna, Budapest & Prague show thanks to suggestions here)
OK, I have no idea if this is actual the actual Greek language or just Greek-sounding gobbly-gook, and it comes from a silly Dutch movie... but hey, it sounds Greek: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B53YY74OMqc&feature=related
Maybe some Zorba the Greek music from the film? I hear so much Turkish music blasting out of the cars here, it has become one of my least favorites to hear. :-)) Almost as bad as German rap, though you hear Turkish rap too, which I guess you don't want either. Have you looked on Youtube perhaps, to find something that you like?
If you want to learn more about Turkish music, traditional and modern, I highly recommend Fatih Akin's documentary Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul. It's not difficult to find, got it at our local library ;-) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0459242/
@Jo... thanks, definitely do not want rap and yes I have listened to tons of songs on utube, but nothing resonated with me, so thought I would ask here before I spent hours more looking. Will listen to Zorba the Greek @Beatrix... thank you, I will try and find it
Check out the Putumayo Music website. Bet you'll find something there.
I will have to ask my sister for recommendations on Turkish music for you. She lives in Mannheim and has been to Turkey several times. Plus thankfully there are enough Turks in the area so she is exposed to some nice sounds.
And I found out recently that this well-known "surfer rock" tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFrDSFzlKwE ... is actually based on this popular Greek song from the 1920s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWTS7hbdzbo I understand it's popular in Turkey as well.
NAXOS also now does downloads so you should be able to find them online. We used to partner with them to develop online music for music appreciation books. ; ) Also, I have a great LP (record album to you youngsters) Lilacs out of the Dead Land by Manos Hadjidakis that I got after coming back from a trip to Greece, many years ago. It is terrific. The artist is on iTunes. He did Zorba, but not this album. If you find it digitally, let me know!
Not sure if this is outdated technology already, but there's a music company called Naxos that used to produce (and still produces?) CDs of world music, including medieval and early modern European music. You could do a search for them online and see what you find.
For the Turkish music you could always use some Dervish music - think Turkish classical. Google one of the composers (e.g. Dede Efendi) and see what pops up. It might work well in your slideshow depending on the mood you're trying to create. Good luck.
Or if you want Turkish pop, pull-up something from Tarkan on You Tube. He's a huge, platinum-selling artist. The beats are pretty cool, even if you're not into dance music.
for greek music try Notis Sfakianakis,Elena Paparizou or from the era of "oldies but goldies " Nana Mouskouri ,Vicki Leandros or perhaps Vangelis (he's well known in US),for turkish try Manga , Tarkan or maybe Hadise ,Serdar Ortac
