Did not receive random pre-check with online boarding pass, but got waved through to the pre-check line anyway at DTW. Virtually no lines. Wednesday must be a good day to fly.
One never knows.

I am jealous.
Good for you! Enjoy the moment!
I seem to have zero luck with random Pre-Check tickets. Last year when I traveled with my parents and sister to Florida, the three of them got Pre-Check at the Fort Lauderdale airport on the way home and I was stuck in the regular line. And on April 19 when my sister and I flew to Paris, she got Pre-Check in St. Louis and I didn't.
I have gotten random pre-check for my last eight trips! The couple ahead of me had to go through the regular line (maybe ten people). Perhaps it was the SKY code on my arcing pass.
TSA was supposed to be ending random pre-check assignments. They did it for awhile as an incentive to show people how great it is, but that program was supposed to have ended. It does represent a technical security breach if you haven't been pre-screened (I'd argue in actuality it doesn't make a difference, but I'm not a security expert). I have heard that with the long TSA lines, they are checking people with sniffer dogs and if they clear that, will send people over to pre-check to lessen the lines. Business and first class passengers or those with status often get pre-check even if they aren't technically enrolled.

I think you're right. And it doesn't take a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
Airport security was a breeze this week for us at modestly sized airports since both had dedicated Pre-Check lanes. Global entry is worth it for us.
And yesterday I was reading about the horribly long lines now for security in U.S. airports because of a shortage of TSA workers.
