Our 10th year anniversary is coming up next year and we're planning a trip to Europe. Although I absolutely love Paris, I thought we could do prague, budapest, and slovenia too in 2 weeks. This would be our 4th trip to Paris. Thoughts?
Let's test it. If all you are interested in are the cities then
1 depart US
2 arrive Paris
3 Paris
4 Paris
5 Paris to Prague flight
6 Prague
7 Prague
8 Prague
9 Prague to Budapest by train (pretty much all day or take a night train)
10 Budapest
11 Budapest
12 Budapest
13 Budapest to Ljubljana by train (again, all day trip)
14 Ljubljana to Lake Bled
15 Lake Bled
16 Lake Bled back to Ljubljana
17 Back to the states.
Nope. Cant do it unless you are into whirlwind tours.
Paris is always good but I would be inclined to consider Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Vienna, Melk, Wachau Valley, Gyor, Pannonhalma, Eger and Budapest. Other options would be Kosice or Pecs. These all work well for transportation and cross just about every historical period and cultural divide. Even this list doesn't fit in 14 days but its a good group to choose from.
Then save Slovenia for a trip with Croatia and maybe even Italy in the future.
I did 6 days in Italy w 3 friends this summer plus we rented a car in Venice and drove to lake bled for 48 hours. 5 years from now we are going to do Prague, Budapest and possibly Vienna. its up to you....
Following your heart: If you can't live another travel w/o Paris, Go.
If you can handle the separation period concentrate on the other places.
It's an opportunity to fall in love with a new place and with the person you are in love one. It's a win-win.
Following your brain: You are in love with Paris you'll be together again some day.
I agree with James. We just returned from 2 weeks in the following cities
Prague 4 nights
Cesky Krumlov 2 nights with a pit stop in Kutna Hora
Vienna 3 nights
Bratislava 1 night
Budapest 4 nights
We went with another couple who had never been to any of these cities, while my husband and I had been to all but Krumlov and Bratislava. we didn't feel rushed and had plenty of time to sightsee and relax and people watch. Even hit the baths in Budapest which are a must. we left the States on a Thursday and returned home on a Friday because of the airfare costs. check out Student Agency busses for transport between cities, they are great and cheap.
You could substitute Vienna for Paris because I think the traveling between cities above is easier and shorter, time wise. I would definitely leave Slovenia for a combined trip to Croatia. You could even add Italy to that mix.
Thank you so much everyone. We haven't been to Vienna so that could be a nice substitute. I wish we could have 3 weeks, but my husband's job won't let him have that much time.
James' itinerary shows it can be done. But it's a pretty action packed trip.
We went to Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and Prague in April, and that was enough. Bratislava is a good "resting" city for 2 days. The other cities have dozens and dozens of museums and historic sights, and they're one week destinations. Budapest has over 200 museums alone.
I would suggest taking this route--via train from city to city. And Vienna is an absolutely world class city in every way--as a substitution for Paris. And it's a straight easy trip from city to city.
Vienna impresses me a little more each year. I guess it had to grow on me. So here is my idea of a good trip that does a big city and a smaller town in each of the vastly different countries. The road times are less than 3 hours each leg which means you spend more time vacationing and less time sitting in a transport..
Day 1 Leave the US
Day 2 Arrive Prague
Day 3, 4, in Prague
Day 5 Prague to Cesky Krumlov by Bean Shuttle Service
Day 6 Cesky Krumlov to Vienna by Bean Shuttle Service
Day 7 Vienna
Day 8 Vienna and a day trip to Melk
Day 9 Vienna
Day 10 Vienna to Gyor by train - See the Archabbey at Pannanhalma
Day 11 Gyor to Budapest by train
Day 12, 13, 14 Budapest
Day 15 Depart for home
Now there is actually 16 days in a two week vacation counting the weekends at both ends. So you have one extra day to insert where you think it will do the most for you. Naturally I am a Budapest nut so I would use it for a day trip to someplace like Eger, but you could use it in the Wachau valley or a trip to Bratislava. You might be more into "Empires" and Regal in which case I would say pull a day from Budapest and put it in Vienna. If you are more into Ancient or Beer or Parties then Prague might deserve another day at the expense of Vienna. If you are more into atmosphere (think Paris - my opinion) then you might want to add a day at Budapest. This is an easy, well paced trip with low travel costs and generally lower costs overall as compared to Western Europe. If Budapest ends up in your final plans then come to the Hungary forum will I will without shame pimp the heck out of the town and do what I can to provide you with the information you need to have a good time.
would you be comfortable spending a few days in paris by yourself after he flies back to work? or do you have a girlfriend who might meet you there?
Good point. One of our Christmas group in Budapest this year is flying on to Paris for a few nights before he heads back to the US. His multi-city ticket didn't cost anymore than our RT ticket to Budapest.
My husband wouldn't like it if I stayed. He'd be so jealous because I would loving Paris and he wasn't.
Yes, I think the route is doable. It always depends on what kind of trip you're planning. The major sightseeing spots you will definitely be able to do and see.
Of course, in most of the destinations you could already spend many days more exploring new places. But since you'll never see everything, a few days are realistic to do the most important things.
Hello Sue,
If you will be away from your home a total of 14 days, I recommend going to a maximum total of three countries : Prague, Budapest, Paris (in that direction). I think you could fly from Budapest to Paris.
Sue,
Im on my last day in Budapest. My trip is :
Munich - Pragur - Vienna - Budapest - Krakow
Yes you can do it butbit will depend on where in slovenia snd what you want to do in terms of day trips ir not.
I took the trains from each city and they were in the 3+ hour range.
By the way i spent 3 full days in each place, except in Krakow. But im heading there tomorrow.
Where ever you choose, good luck.
Happy trails
