Trip to Colchester, England - help with bus, taxi etc

Thank you all for your help mapping our England trip and figuring out rail passes etc for our 20 day trip. I have another question, after reading Im more confused than ever. We will be staying at Drapers hotel on High St for 4 days and will be doing local events/museums etc, what's the best way to get from hotel to town, via bus seems to be cheaper than taxis,
do we get a bus pass for 5 days?? oyster card or what's easiest way to get around, it will be a round trip daily. Thankyou so much

You confused me at first: "Trip to Colchester . . . will be staying at Drapers hotel on High St . . . what's the best way to get from hotel to town,"
The "High Street" is the main street in most English towns. If you are in the High Street, you are by definition in the centre of the town or village.

So I looked up the hotel. Is it this one: https://www.thedrapershotelearlscolne.co.uk/
"The Drapers Hotel is located in the heart of Earls Colne, offering a nine bedroom boutique hotel, restaurant and sports bar."
That is High Street, Earls Colne, Essex. Not High Street, Colchester!
23 Km from Colchester to be exact (click for route).

If "From Hotel to town" you mean Earls Colne (population 3693) you are already there. If you mean Colchester, then whichever method of transport you used to get to Earls Colne. It does not have a rail service.
For bus info see here: https://www.traveline.info/
There appears to be a regular bus service, takes ~45 minutes.

Bus pass - probably not. Just pay the bus driver when you get on.
Oyster Cards are only valid in London, you are way outside London here.

You're staying at the Drapers Hotel in Earls Colne and you want to take a bus each day to Colchester? Just buy a return ticket from the bus driver each day.

Expedia does a nasty with a Drapers Hotel which they give an address for as 53 High Street, Colchester, England and a telephone number of 020 3564 5165.

Then at the bottom they show a map of Earls Colne and say it is 12 miles to Colchester Town Hall. Naughty Expedia. Then there's the telephone number. 0203 is the prefix for a non-specific London area (like 0207 and 0208 for inner and outer London respectively, but newer( despite some blather on wikipedia)). Colchester area code is 01206.

So what's going on there, I have no idea.

Is that the place you think you will be, rosalene88?

Colchester is a place near the Essex coast, near Constable Country.

Yes that’s where we’ll be. The address is listed as 53 High st, Colchester phone (1787) 224500. Thankyou

01787 is the area code for Earls Colne and Sudbury.

So will you stay there? Rural, in a village 12 miles away, not in the town of Colchester, without a car you will spend either a lot of money on taxis or a long time on buses every day to get where you want to be.

IT seems to me a bit tricksy to say somewhere is in the Colchester High Street - which does exist and is right in the shopping centre of Colchester - when it is 12 miles away (a long way in England) in a village.

I wonder what you will do?

Not much to do with the OPs question but for London 020 8 and 020 7 do not reliably indicate the location of the telephone, unless it pre-dates 1995 in its installation and customer. One reason is that 020 8 was used up across London before 020 3 started to be used, meaning a significant amount deployed in inner London.

Rosalene, just to confirm. There is:

  • High Street, Earls Colne, Essex
  • High Street, Colchester, Essex

Two different streets in two different towns 12 miles apart.
The only "Drapers Hotel" on the internet is in Earls Colne, NOT Colchester. Plus the area code you quoted (01787) is the code for Earls Colne, NOT Colchester.

Unless here is a totally different Drapers Hotel which the internet doesn't know about, you were given the wrong address.

This hotel is not in Colchester.

We are staying at the Drapers in Earls Cone, have A family wedding nearby at Chalkney Water Meadows and wanted to be close. Do hope to venture into town for church & Museum. I don’t know why when I printed my confirmation from trip advisor it didn’t print the full address I just verified there is only in Earls vine & we’re booked. Thankyou so much your forum has been a big help
