Trip Planning March, Start in VIenna, end in Paris

I was able to get a couple of business class tickets on various airlines (Austrian and Air France) so we will be arriving in Vienna in mid March and returning from Paris in late March. Other than that we have no plans. Right now we are talking about 16 full days.

We've been to Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Rothenburg, Paris, Brussels, Bern, Milan and several other places in Europe. We aren't opposed to returning to them. I'm thinking while we are recovering from jet lag in Vienna, Bratislava is only an 1 hr train ride away and is probably worth a day trip since we've never been.

After that I'm not sure whether we should go counter clockwise through Prague (never been), into Germany, maybe Luxembourg and onward to Paris for the return flight. Or go clockwise and maybe go to Munich, Lichenstein, Basel and up the southeast side of France to Paris.

I have zero language skills and my wife speak Spanish which won't help on this trip. I wouldn't mind getting to more of northern Italy but that might be too far out of the way. I've done ambitious trips in the past where we were moving cities daily but that was 20 years ago and I wasn't sure I'd ever be back. Now that we've been a few times I'd like to stay in a base location for a few days before moving on, preferably via trains. We've always enjoyed our time in Germany and northern Italy. I've been to Paris before and it wasn't something that captivated me.

Any suggestions?

Since we are currently retired our schedule is flexible and I can, if I can find other flights, modify the return flight for a reasonably small fee. Normally I wouldn't go now but would plan for the Christmas markets at the end of the year but the last few years have had a lot of stuff going on, including health issues and I wanted to do something while we both seem to be healthy and aren't dealing with any other family medical issues (in the past 4 years we've had personal injuries that took forever to heal and had to deal with several family medical issues that made travel impossible).

Thanks.

To start, you could head north to Prague and then on to Berlin. You could also work in a side trip to Cesky Krumlov before Prague. Berlin is an amazing city and you could easily spend five days there.

Providing you don't want to spend much time in Vienna and Paris, you could explore this itinerary: Vienna-Prague-Dresden-Berlin-Strasbourg-Paris. If that's too much moving, eliminate Strasbourg if you can stand the longer train ride Berlin-Paris. It does seem a shame to chug right through Dresden on your way from Prague to Berlin. Both Prague and Berlin are very worthy destinations, and Berlin especially is diverse in its offerings, so check it out.

Prague has really nice Easter markets. We were surprised when we found them precovid, and had a great time. There's a stage and late afternoon we saw several performances of traditional dances. The kids were particularly cute.
Vienna might also have Easter markets. Just a thought...,. Have a great trip!

This is going to sound stupid, especially considering how much travel I've done compared to the average person, but I'm wary of traveling through France due to potential language issues. Is that stupid?

For work or vacation I've been to probably 10+ European countries and several Mideast countries but when it comes to France I'm wary. Admittedly I didn't care for Paris (and neither did I care for Naples) but I really would like to explore more of the countryside of France especially as it relates to WW2. Not something we have time for on this trip but maybe later. I didn't have any bad issues in Paris with the language but it is one of those weird quirks people can have.

Am I overly concerned with language issues exploring more of France?

Years ago I had a business trip to Naples and after that trip I avoided Italy since Naples was so congested, and just had me stressed out crossing a street. Fortunately years later we went to Milan, Bergamo and Lake Como and had a wonderful time. And I would readily go back to Italy.

2 5 hr train to Budapest, maybe with a night in Gyor on the way and to visit the Pannonhslma Archabbey. 6 nights in Budapest with a dayvtrio to Szentendre then a discount airline about 2 hours nonstop to Paris for about $100
