I understand that standard Medicare, like most US health insurance, does not cover most overseas medical expenses. In reading the fine print of my Medicare coverage, I discovered that many Medigap (supplemental) policies, including mine, do provide this coverage. Has anyone had experience with this? I've put in a question to my Medigap carrier for further details, but I'm interested in hearing any first-hand experience with this. Many thanks for your responses.
I don’t have experience with this, but after helping my mom plan for some of her travel, please consider evac/medical transfer type insurance as part of your insurance mix. That wasn’t included, although medical was (out of network) with her policies so we looked separately for this element.
We too get travel insurance for the medical and the medical evacuation coverage, plus un reimbursable expenses. I don’t believe my supplemental coverage covers evacuation/transfer. Considering the overall cost of a trip, insurance is nominal.
I believe that Medicare coverage with your medigap is limited to lifetime $50,000.
You are on the right track in contacting your medigap insurer as that will be more definitive than replies you get on here.
Yes, some medigap or supplemental policies cover foreign travel medical expenses, but not all levels. However, I believe the best I have seen was a 20% deductible. I see no mention of evacuating reimbursement however. Travel insurance is a necessary cost of a trip no matter your age.
It is important to know what coverage you have and to read your policy. I have Kaiser Medicare Advantage and I am covered for urgent and emergency care worldwide. I do also have Medjet for medical evacuation.
I called United Health/AARP to confirm what my Part F supplemental covers before I bought annual trip insurance from Allianz. The rep I talked to confirmed $50,000 lifetime benefit. They reimburse 80% of approved medical after the bills/statements are submitted and reviewed for payment. If you aren't sure what your insurance covers or can't sort through the legalese, call your provider.
I bought Allianz AllTrips Premier annual insurance for an additional $50,000 yearly medical to cover two trips. Plus it has trip interruption, travel delay and covid coverage. I will be buying an annual Medjet Horizon plan for evacuation. The Allianz plan is secondary medical to the UH plan. Although the Allianz plan has evacuation, it gets me to the closest approved facility. Medjet will get me home.
Disclaimer: my trips are this September and next June, so I have not used the insurances or filed claims (hopefully never).
Thanks to all who responded. Has anyone actually filed claims for foreign medical expenses with their Medicare supplemental coverage?
We are looking at trip insurance. Costs are quite variable. What should we expect to pay for insurance covering medical evacuation of 500,000, COVID issues, and trip interruption?
Paul, you can look at insuremytrip and squaremouth to find a range of company's and policies.
As I stated above, I bought an annual policy from Allianz for trip insurance and medical with a covid rider. The medical pays secondary to my Medicare supplement. I am also buying a Medjet policy for evacuation because they will get you home instead of to the nearest available facility; it's in the fine print. I did not go from the cheapest plans but for what I think fits my needs best (traveling solo for the first time).

I learned about both of these and others on the forum over the past couple years from people's experiences. Then I did my own research.
Our Medicare doesn’t cover it. We have had several large medical claims paid in full quickly by Travel Guard.
Suki, first time I have read here where someone actually claimed on their travel insurance. Thank you. They just went to the top of my list.
James, Agrotz34 on this thread reported that Allianz paid their claims promptly.
We also had a wonderful experience with Travel Guard some years ago when my mother fell and broke her kneecap in Belgium, requiring surgery and a week in the hospital. They guaranteed payment to the hospital and provided extensive additional services, often ones I had not even thought about until they suggested it. I have been loyal customer ever since.
