Trip Itinerary Planning and drive times

For those trip itineraries that involve having a car what is the longest or shortest drive time between locations that you feel is practical? The recent itinerary from Porto to Bordeaux that I planned over a month long trip has the majority of the hops being less than 2.5 hours, with a lot of 1 hour hops.

Usually we are staying 3 nights in each location, with one 4 night stay, one 2 night stay, and one 1 night stay to break up a longer drive. Worth pointing out is the trip concludes with a 7 night stay followed by 2 nights in our departure city, Bordeaux.

Is a short one hour hop worth checking into and out of accommodations? I feel that yes, it can be worth it if the locations you are going are different from each other and the time spent there is long enough so that accommodation swapping doesn’t become tiresome. For example, Luarca (fishing village, coastal scenery, sea food) and Oviedo (seemingly appealing small city, cider bars, Austrian cuisine) are around one hour from each other but seem to be very different. I think the same can be said for Oviedo and Gijón. (Close but different) but corrections appreciated.

Of course you could day trip between these two places, but there is also the benefit of being able to spend some after dark time in a place as well as have some wine with dinner. Driving at night in Europe is not something I would do and would never drive after drinking.

On the other hand I want to avoid spending too much time driving in one shot. A long train ride can be enjoyable and relaxing but too many hours in a car is not something I’m comfortable with, even with stops along the way. I think my upper limit is about 3 hours.

On a driving itinerary how do you factor in drive times and distance between overnight accommodations?

There are so many factors. Probably the most important factors are the driver(s) tolerance, possible stops in between places, and the quality of the road. My husband does almost all of the driving and he doesn't mind driving for hours. I prefer shorter distances. We usually stay at bases 2 to 4 hours apart and only drive up to one hour (each way) for day trips. You also have to consider the security of leaving luggage in your car at some stops. We sometimes have one night stops and don't mind them. It's important to have your stuff well organized. Basically, I use Google Maps and Via Michelin to determine drive times and consider sites to visit in between hotels. I also, like you, consider towns we want to just hang out in for a while. We are up early and usually at the next hotel by 5 pm on travel days. I think your itinerary sounds great if you're not paying a huge drop off fee for the card rental.

joefarnacle,
We operate much like Cindy. And we use viamichelin.com a lot for projecting our drive times and routes. However, I always add some time to their calculations because they don't figure in times to get gas or food or use the facilities, as well as traffic problems. If we arrive earlier than my projection, all the better! Also, we almost always prefer a scenic route over the autoroutes (main highways), so our drives are slower and may entail more stops.
We also like to get the Michelin paper roadmaps for an area, to see the big picture and maybe find someplace along the way that could be worth a stop. We trace our routes on the map and keep it as a souvenir of that trip. Just a thought!
As far as how long drive times will be, it will depend on our general itinerary and trip purpose. Sometimes it is a change of venue, sometimes a day trip.

Since we now visit smaller geographic areas on trips rather than trying to cover entire an entire country, we try to limit total daily driving to three hours or less. During that time we’ll stop at places en route. We also try to stay at locations for 2-3 nights, taking day trips as necessary.
