Trip itinerary advice: From Paris - Swiss Alps - Cinque Terre - Munich

Hi there!

If you like puzzles/ problem solving, then this is question is for you! :D -
I have from Sept 15-22 to start from Paris (using this city purely as a launching pad to fly to wherever is most feasible) and end up in Munich for Oktoberfest :) I have no preference in order of places to visit except for where we begin and end.

Some things to consider:
- Please don't include any days to spend in Paris if creating a suggested itinerary. We are only flying out or taking a train from here beginning on 9/15.
- I have a friend in Nuremberg who has a car and can drive us and willing to meet us wherever is needed.
- We're fine with flying and taking trains when necessary.
- We would like to stop in Lucerne to meet a friend and visit the Swiss Alps.
- We would like to spend about 3 days in Cinque Terre hiking and lounging.
- Since Oktoberfest begins on 9/19 this year, I definitely need to have that portion at the end of the trip.

I'm thinking that feasible itineraries will either exclude Cinque Terre or Oktoberfest since they don't seem to geographically mesh well with each other. I'd be sad to exclude either one, but I also don't want to rush through anything either. I'm open to anything at this point :)

I've been racking my brain over what's the most efficient use of our time and days to preferably match up with the fest so any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

If you fly with a budget carrier from Paris to Pisa (see www.skyscanner.com), then the train ride from Pisa Centrale station to Monterosso (for instance) takes 1 - 2 hours, depending on the time of day. Other Cinque Terre towns might have an additional train connection. From there, you can train north to Switzerland and Germany along a fairly logical route. Plan on a full day on the train to connect each country. How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it.

Cinque Terre is the outlier...can it! You'll waste too much time getting there.

Reasonable itinerary.

15th. Paris.

16th. Paris.

17th. Paris

18th. Train to Lucerne. 4 12 hours.

19th. Lucerne

20th. Lucerne...early afternoon train to Munich. 6 hours. Have your friend meet you here.

21st. Munich.

22st. Munich.

Thank you for the replies! I'm sorry if my post was misleading, but I'll change it to reflect the fact that I will be flying out of Paris on 9/15 (not spending any days here) to hopefully fulfill my bucket list of vising Cinque Terre, Swiss Alps, and Oktoberfest in Munich. So if you have a possible itinerary suggestion, please do not include any days to spend in Paris.

Thanks so much! Sorry for the miscommunication regarding that part of the post! :)

Next time round, be sure to fly open jaw into one city and out of another. Round trips out of one city require backtracking, and that can be expensive and inefficient.

For some unknown reason, travel between Munich and Paris is not as easy and inexpensive as it could be.

There was nothing misleading about your post. Very clear that you didn't want any time in Paris.

The good news is that you know what you don't want (Paris) and what you do want (Munich). I would drop Italy and Swiss Alps, and substitute German or Austrian Alps due to your limited time. Focus in on a smaller geographic area and reduce travel time.

PS I hope you have made your reservations for Munich

The original post does not clarify if you fly in to Paris on 15/9, or if you are available to head out from Paris on 15/9. It also suggests you wish to end up in Munich, not to return to Paris. Thanks for clarifying this one.

Hello maithile. Oktoberfest days are the worst days for being at Munich. I recommend : do not go to Munich. Apparently, you desire to be at the Mediterranean Sea. So, I recommend :
Fly from Paris to Pisa (low cost airline), and ride in trains from Pisa to a village in the Cinque Terr. Be there three nights.
Ride in trains from the Cinque Terre to Lucerne. Could you be in Switzerland an extra day or two, for you to see the Alps ?

I recommend, when you are in Switzerland, go to Alps mountains. One possibility is a day trip from Lucerne to the top of the Stanserhorn. At 1898 Meters above sea level, the Stanserhorn is the second-tallest mountain located near Lake Lucerne. It has the only revolving restaurant in that region, and offers a 360 degree view, including looking toward Mount Titlis. A train goes from Lucerne to Stans (west of Lake Lucerne). A funicular train goes from Stans to Kalti, and a cable car to the top. At Stans the Dorfplatz is the hub of the charming town center. The tourist information office in Stans offers sightseeing trips in the village. www.stanserhorn.ch
