Trip Insurance Claims

I was wondering if anyone had any good advice for filing trip insurance claims. We just got back from our European vacation and I ended up having to spend 2 nights in a London hospital and had surgery before flying home. We have trip insurance with $100k medical plan and have already started getting bills but they're very vague. We contacted the insurance company who sent us a claim form to fill out but I know how insurance companies are! Any help, advice, tips or tricks would be most welcome as I'm sure the bills for surgery are going to be very high!! Thanks!

Hi Jennifer, so sorry to hear about your surgery and hospital stay. I hope it didn't ruin your trip. This is the perfect example for why to buy travel insurance. Is your travel insurance medical coverage primary or secondary? I imagine since you say it's $100k worth of coverage it is primary. Just be sure and if it's secondary coverage just be sure to submit your claims to your primary insurance first. I hope you have kept all your paper work the hopsital gave you. You may have to wait until you have received all of your hospital bills, I would check with your insurance carrier to be sure. I tend to overdo it and send in copies of everything pertaining to my claim. I don't want them to have to come back to me and say my claim is delayed because I failed to submit something. I also scan my documents and email them, if possible, as proof that I sent my documents in (you may have to send multiple emails so as not to overload your server or theirs). Don't be nervous calling the insurance carrier, if you have questions, ask them, you paid for their service!

Hi Jennifer, The best advise for travelers filing a claim is make sure you keep all documentation associated with a loss. This means getting copies of the medical records prior to leaving the hospital, keeping receipts for any out of pocket expenses, etc. This makes the claims process much easier and take less time to process. There will always be forms to complete; unfortunately, this is just part of the process. Good luck! Vikki
