We are planning a trip using Vienna as our home base and travelling by train to Budapest to Krakow to Prague to Vienna. I am wondering about taking an overnight train from Budapest to Krakow. Will I miss all the beautiful scenery?
I would fly. It is a long, long train trip.
I'm no fun on this sort of trip. I dont see the romance in trains. I would train from Vienna to Budapest, then fly to Krakow (LOT) then Fly to Prague (RYANAIR), then take the train to Vienna. Something less than $200 total for the planes and trains.
Sorry, no help. BUT yes, the scenery is pretty good crossing through Slovakia. But Slovakia is a good trip on its own.....
Yes, the night train does exist as an option.
Budapest is a major night train hub, very convenient depending on the direction one goes from Budapest.
Krakow Glowny (central station) has been refurbished, expanded, modernised, etc. I would choose the night train unless you really want to see the landscape.
I took the bus from Krakow to Budapest 2 years ago. Before there were direct flights it was the fastest way. I was looking forward to scenery . . . and disappointed. Maybe the train has a better route.
