Trieste, Italy to Slovenia

I have a few questions and hope I can get some advice, we will spend 3 days at Slovenia and want to end at Ljublana to catch train to Venice, my questions are:
1. We are flying to Trieste, anyone has advice best way to cross to Slovenia from Trieste.

2. We are thinking to rent a car for traveling within Slovenia, by entering Slovenia from Trieste, I am not sure which town will be best for us to pick up rental car.
3. We are going in mid Nov this year, I heard the passes at Julian Alps is closed in November, is it true?
4. Also would like to stay at Tourist farm, anyone has recommendation?

Thanks
SW

Any information will be appreciated.

I really recomend renting a car in Slovenia. You will be able to enjoy the country side and mountains way more by car. I like to just drive and get 'lost' while in Slovenia. It is such a beautiful country. I don't think the Julian Alps close, because they are a big ski destination. It really doesn't matter where you cross into the country. There are no border checks, but you will have to buy a 40 euro sticker for your car. That covers the road taxes and toll roads. I would just rent the car in Triest and return it there too. Of course check with the rental company if that is ok. If not taking a train to a larger Slovenian city from Triest would get you close to a car rental location. I've never done a farm stay in SLovenia, but I have friends who have done it and loved it. you can just look at the slovenia national tourism website. Have fun. I love slovenia!!!!

Hi, SooWai.

You won't have any problems with the road from Trieste to Slovenia/Ljubljana closing, it follows the coast, which helps keep the snow off, then goes strait up the valley to Lju and the north.

I too would recommend renting in Trieste round trip, and just hoping the train from there to Venice. It's a very easy place to drive. Garmin GPS units work great there. All freeway Trieste to Lju.

**Many of the rental car companies already have the sticker for Slovenian road tax on the car which is nice, saved us 40EUR! If not, they are also planning on releasing a 7 day pass for much cheaper - but it keeps getting delayed.

Taking the train or bus from Trieste to Slovenia these days is a pain. The bus schedules are now fairly infrequent, with odd times (really late or really early).

The train lines don't actually connect between Italy, and Slovenia (Never rebuilt after WWII). You have to bus up into the hills above Trieste (45mins), and then board at a very small station. We worth just renting the car in Trieste to avoid the hassle!

Haven't done the tourist farms - but highly recommend a day in Postojna and the caves (Postojna, Predjama, and Skocjan)

Hope that helps, let us know if you have other questions!
