We will be in Santorini start of September then fly across to Italy for 3 weeks. I’m just trying to work out what to pack. I’m a dress and skirt person but just seeing what I pack for Santorini I can then wear in Italy. I’m from a small town in Australia where our summer temperatures have been 44 celsius. We will be going to Rome, Amalfi, Florence, Lake Como and Venice.
It will be hot in Santorini in September, but not as hot at your temps. Are you from Perth?
It will be a little cooler in Italy. Remember, when visiting churches in Europe, many will not allow you to wear shorts inside.
By the end of your trip it will be late September when temps (especially up in Lake Como area, especially in the evenings) could be very different from the start of your trip. Might not be but September is one of those months when by the end you could get some cooler weather. Probably not 'cold' but I'd certainly want at least one pair of long pants and a sweater.
I’ve looked at the weather for September in all destinations at it ranged from 14-32 with Lake Como and Venice slightly cooler. I will check prior to our departure date. I have read a few websites which tell you not to wear this or that and try to wear clothes that you will blend in rather than looking like a tourist.
There has been discussion on the forum about blending in and the general thought is, you will look like a tourist because you are one (and dont speak the language). If you are worried about being targeted for pick-pocketing bc you are a tourist, just take normal precautions. Otherwise, dress in a way that makes you feel most comfortable in your own skin for the weather conditions.
I like to wear leggings under a skirt or dress to add warmth, but this would only work if leggings would be comfortable for your style and sense of self (above). I have a pair of smart wool lightweight leggings that are perfect for under a skirt or shorts - I only needed them on the plane for our last trip (Greece), but they were perfect because they weigh nothing and contribute nothing to the bag in terms of space. I generally wear flip-flops or sandals and a skirt/dress or shorts when hot, and add leggings to this or wear a pair of Kuhl cargo pants that roll into capris for mid-to-cold weather. I also find that something on my neck (some kind of scarf) goes a long way to adding warmth. Im a middle-aged, athletic, outdoorsy type (for context). My style is somewhere between Patagonia and Boden.
I would expect Lk. Como to be much cooler. Pack layers, and what those are depends on what you feel comfortable wearing.
