Travelling from Madrid to the Spanish coast WITH an 88 yr old - ON plane, train or bus?

Hi there,
Apologies, my previous post was unclear. I am travelling WITH an 88 year old - my dad.
We are travelling ON a plane, train or bus that is 88 years old!

Does anyone have any experience of travelling with older people?
My father used to be a great traveller (visiting my brother in Valencia with just cabin luggage in his 70s - his roller-blades).
However, after a ski accident aged 84, he's slower.

I'm exploring options - being mindful of cost and rest and not rushing transfers.
I'm Australian and I don't have any European train experience at all.
We flew to Valencia earlier in the year and I needed a wheelchair at Madrid airport to get him and the cabin only luggage for us both from one terminal to the next. Flying and walking too far was too much.

I'm thinking to fly one way Prague-Madrid, then plane or train or bus to Almeria, Motril or Malaga to meet up with a cruising yacht.

We will then sail for up to 5 days and get off further to the west down the coast and make our way back to Madrid, again by train/plane/bus and taxi in between.

Booking ahead is a little challenging ... any suggestions would be welcome.

I'd love anyone else's perspective and experience please.

Thank you :)

Tanya

Travelling from Czech Republic to Spanish coast with an 88 yr old -
plane, train or bus?

I think of the three I would feel safest on an 88 year old train.

My wife is having mobility issues @ 68 years old. Our memories of Europe are strong on our many, many visits.
She may be limited to taking auto trips of the U.S. in the future.
There's just a limit to how old travelers can be if they're not fully mobile.
And I anticipate forwarding pictures of my world tours back to my wife at home in the future.

I, for one, would not feel comfortable in an 88 year old plane.

Tanya,

I've taken some trips with my mom, who loves to travel, but she has also slowed down at the age of 89 now.

Last October, she was 88 & we traveled to Spain, but we did not take a cruising yacht!

My mom would not like going on a yacht because she's prone to seasickness.

Anyway, we spent 3 weeks in Andalucía, visiting Córdoba(5N) Granada(4N) Sevilla(5N) & Toledo(5N), Madrid(1N)

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Make sure your dad stays well hydrated, doesn't skip meals & gets a good night's sleep.

  • Be prepared to take frequent breaks throughout the day

  • Stay longer on any of your destinations --Avoid 1-2 night stays

  • Avoid too many day trips-- sometimes LESS is MORE. {We didn't take any day trips on this trip}

  • Know how to figure out bus routes in every city you plan to visit or take a taxi to avoid walking long distances

  • Make sure he packs all his medications; prescriptions & over the counter medications & go over them prior to leaving his home

  • Your dad may not tell you when he's hungry, tired or needs to go to the bathroom... Until a second before he does, so be prepared & ask frequently.

  • Your dad may do well in the mornings when he's had a good nights' sleep, but by lunchtime, he may need to go back to the hotel to rest & to put his feet up. He may be willing to go out later in the afternoon, to go eat an early dinner, or he may be too tired.
So, you'll bring something in, or order room service from the hotel.

  • Make sure the hotels you book have a working elevator & no stairs leading to your room.

  • Be prepared to carry or lug around his luggage wherever & whenever (Packing light is key! We only travel with a carry-on each)

  • Always request wheelchair assistance at airports & at train stations if you think he needs it.

  • Make sure he gets up & walks around on the plane, especially if the flight is longer than a couple of hours

  • Most museums & some monuments have elevators, but you may need to ask for assistance

  • Travel in the Spring or the Fall for best weather.

  • Get travel insurance

My mom didn't mind traveling by bus or train as long as she had a comfortable seat. I think she prefers to travel by train, bus or taxi, over planes... Mainly because there's too much time waiting around at airports.

When are you planning to take this trip?

How long will your trip be?

What are your interests?

Does your dad really want to go on the cruising yacht?

Hope this helps ;-)

I almost forgot... Your dad will need the following...

  • Comfortable walking shoes with good support.
  • An extra pair of eyeglasses if he wears any.
  • Sunglasses & sunscreen, especially if you go on the cruising yacht.
  • If he wears a hat, don't forget it!

Since the dad in question is an experienced traveler, I'm sure he knows he needs good shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc., and can probably even pack for himself. I know my 80s Mom can.
