Traveling with a bicycle

My fiancée and I are going to do some touring of Europe and I was considering the idea of getting bicycles, but would still want to do major travels by bus, train, or plane. Is that costly /cumbersome /impossible in most western Europe areas?

In Europe traveling with a bicycle is not as big a problem as it is becoming in the US. With buses they are pretty good with sliding into the storage area under a bus. Most trains, IC and locals, with accept bicycles in a special luggage area. Look for the bicycle symbol on the train schedule.

If you are taking your bikes from the US. It is big hassle. Have to be boxed and it will be surcharge and it could expensive. I think the US fee could be $80. In Europe you could take bikes for free on an airline but doubt it that is true today.

For all of the above reasons we have now shifted to bikes that pack into a large rolling suitcase. At 40 lb a bit heavy and a little awkward to load on a train but avoids a lot of hassle.

Once on the ground Europe is very bike friendly.

Frank,

How about a link, model number, or something for these bikes?

I just googled "folding bicycle" and got some good results of various prices and styles. I was thinking of maybe just going for a cheap box store bike or hitting up craigslist or the classifieds over there and just selling it off before I come back maybe.
