Traveling to Europe with a 22 month old.

I am a once or twice a year traveler from San Fran to London. We would like to take our 22 month old on our next trip soon. Any advice for the plane portion of the trip and she will have her own seat for the 10 hour journey. Looking for do's and don'ts......Thanks !!

My biggest "do" is spoil the kids. In addition to the in-flight movies/shows, this usually means lots of kid-friendly snacks. Snacks that take more time to eat are good. It's been a while since I've had a 22mo, but I used to bring those cheese spread (or peanut butter) and cracker things and sloooowly spread the plasticky imitation cheese over each cracker. You can wrap snacks and little toys (even ones they already own but you are bringing) in tissue paper to give an added element of fun (and to take up more flight time by unwrapping. Lots of tape can make it more challenging and stretch out the time.)

Another one of my favorites are those little post its. They can stick them everywhere and pull them off and re-stick them. You can color on them, too. I also like write-on wipe off boards as they're easy to use with a child strapped in a carseat.

Good luck!

James had good suggestions for the toys. I'd also suggest nothing with lots of pieces that can get lost in the seats. And buy her a couple of small new toys and books to surprise her with on the plane.

I can't stress enough the importance of bringing your own snacks. She might not like what they serve, or she might be hungry and they're not serving anything. Make sure it's nothing messy, you don't want to be sitting in Cheerios for the whole flight.

We did, on the advice of our pediatrician, give my son Benedryl for his first flight when he was 22 months old. If you decide to do this, make sure she's tried Benedryl before, it knocks some people out, but can also be like speed for others.

Are you bringing a car seat for her? I always liked having something to strap my little ones into, keeps them safer and keeps them still for a bit. And run her around the airport as much as possible before getting on the plane!
