Traveling to Europe next week but after ban now what happen?

I am an independent traveler and booked everything with Orbitz last January to go to Spain next week and come back in two weeks. I have World Nomad travel insurance and fly with America Airlines as partner with British Airlines. Now after the travel ban announced and the level 3 warnings, I am dazed as to what I should do next. Any advice?

Most of us have no medical background, and in any case we do not know your personal situation. I, at least, don't know anything about World Nomad travel insurance.

However, there are multiple reasons why I wouldn't travel now. In addition, it sounds as if Spain is getting ready to impose some additional activity restrictions of its own. Will you be able to do most of what you have been looking forward to?

There are some very smart and very experienced travelers on this site, and I guarantee that no one has a clue as to what happens next -- and that probably includes our president. We are in unchartered territory and my approach would be to get on the phone to AA if that is the original ticket. Also read the fine print of your insurance policy. There is a high probability that this current situation is excluded from your insurance coverage. And the other thing I might consider is to cool it for 24, maybe 36 hours (I know, hard to do.) so that AA and others can develop their plans for dealing with this situation. Everyone needs time.

Assuming you want to cancel the trip:

  1. Call the insurer and ask what they will cover. Most people are learning that expenses of cancellation are not covered in anpandemic, but everybpokicynisndifferent.

  2. Contact (or check the website) your airline to see what their concellation options are. It may take them a day or two to update thisnin light of the new travel ban.

  3. Start canceling your reserved hotels, etc.

  4. If you have train tickets, contact the company younpurchased them frommtomsee what they offer for refunds or credit.

Things will probably change by then and then change again in another 24 hrs.

China imposed a complete lockdown when they reached 7.000 cases. They record 80.000+ cases now, and it appears they control the situation now.
Europe records 20.000+ cases right now, and just one of many countries declared a less stringent lockdown. I can assure you it will get much worse. Forget Europe for the next few months.
Those sparsely populated national parks in the US look like very attractive destinations right now.

Well given the level 3 warnings, the fact that all the museums and heritage sites are closed, and the travel ban has basically canceled my return flight, I am not going to go to Spain next week. Now I know my travel insurance does not cover pandemics and I don’t have the cancel for any reason coverage. My issue is who do I call first? Orbitz? American Airlines? My travel insurance? My hotels are non refundable but given the situation maybe they can make an exception? Orbitz did one time when my hotel was closed when I arrived. My travel insurance does cover getting the virus before going on the trip or just getting sick. Maybe I should be tested even though I feel fine? Will the airlines reschedule my flights since the travel ban is in effect for return flights from Europe? I don’t know. I do know there is a 3 hour wait time to talk to an Orbitz agent.

I didn’t have 24 hours, I should be at the airport now. I was totally packed when I heard. This morning we decided to cancel.

The travel ban is a bit crazy but WHO also declared a pandemic and CDC went Level 3, so our hope and confidence that we could stay healthy and enjoy our trip evaporated. So we’re not going.

Delta gave me a 6 hour time frame for a call back. Messenger and Twitter have yet to respond, so wait if you’re not flying today.

Not feeling my usual sign-off: “enjoy the planning and the trip” 😞

Stay healthy!

I also had a trip planned to Spain in early April. The Madrid hotel said they wouldn't refund me the pre-paid price, but might give me credit toward another visit if I could tell them when I was coming. I said "who knows?"...she was pleasant and said to check back with her later. I'm hoping the hotel will credit me the amount for maybe this fall.
America Airlines website will waive the change fees, but you have to rebook a flight or lose the price of the ticket. I have no idea when I can rebook a flight. I'll try calling in a couple of days. I imagine if I called now, I'd never get through.

Since you booked through Orbitz you probably want to start with them; they should give you guidance on how to proceed. I'm sure they have spent the last 12+ hours scrambling to prepare responses that reflect most recent updates, so be prepared for a long wait time. I will say that everyone I've dealt with in cancelling our upcoming trip has been more than gracious in their responses.

Martin, I agree about the U.S. national parks!

I have heard that some people have had better results asking for credit for future travel rather than a refund, although surprisingly (from a business sense) I have heard of quite a few outright refunds. I am going to ask for future credit for our holiday flat ... although of course the rub is if they ask for a specific date ...

Best wishes to everyone (re-)planning.

Thank you all for the advice and information. As of now Orbitz basically says don’t bother us unless your trip is 72 hours away. I am online with the museums that I pre-paid my tickets with to see about refunds. It also looks like the airlines will only wave the fees to reschedule your flight, so I am considering going in September. The ticket prices look about the same price as what I paid for my current ones.
