Traveling to Europe in Nov/Dec

If I wear my winter coat will it be counted as a personal item? Will I still be allowed to carry my purse & carry on in the cabin? I will be checking in one piece of luggage. Will I need winter boots if so should I pack them in my checked luggage or wear on the plane??

Angela, you don't tell us where you are going, nor with which airline. Too many countries with varied climates for us to guess if you will need winter boots or not. Different airlines have different rules too. Your coat doesn't count for anything if you wear it onto the plane. If your boots are heavy, and you need the space or limited by the weight in your suitcase, then wear the boots rather than pack them. If they are uncomfortable to wear for such a long period, then pack them.

angela, I have the same comments as Jo. Some additional information would be really helpful! You'll normally be allowed to carry your Purse and carry-on in the cabin on international flights, but if you're using budget airlines within Europe you'll normally only be allowed ONE carry-on item.

Regarding boots: Here is an idea I have occasionally used, and several other posters on the Helpline have suggested as well. If you want to wear your boots on the plane but think they will not be comfortable enough for that, slip them off once you are in your seat. Pack something in your carryon to slip on for the flight, such as a thin pair of bedroom slippers, scuffs, gripper soled socks, or thin flipflops. This won't take up much room in your carryon and could also come in handy in the hotel.

Winter weather in the Frankfurt area, on average, is probably slightly warmer than NJ. If you don't regularly wear winter boots at home, I doubt you'll need them here.

I do not wear snow boots, but every year, I bring my Keen winter walking boots for 1 main reason: Water proof shoes kick butt when it rains everyday. They keep my feet warm and dry. If i wore a water proof sneaker, I might be fine, but if I step in a puddle, or the bottoms of my pants get wet, I don't have to worry about my ankle region of my pants/socks/actual leg being wet. This will be my 5th consecutive trip coming up soon, where I travel in Nov/Dec. I expect it to rain. I am happy when it doesn't, but I go in with a realists approach and expect rain, almost everyday. It seems the further north I went, the more rain i experienced. As for the coat. IF you are truly worried about it counting as a personal item, just wear it on the plane. I put my in a compression bag and into the easy access outer zipper of my carry on bag, just in case I need it right away. Sometimes those planes get cold. Hope this helps

It doesn't usually snow in Frankfurt in Nov. or Dec. until maybe towards the latter part of the month, but that doesn't mean it can't. Last year was exceptional in that it started snowing the middle of Nov. and snowed practically every day until the 1st part of Jan. That said, I have experienced winters here where it snowed maybe a half inch the entire winter, winters where it was bitterly, freezing cold with lots of snow, but not until Jan. Best is to wear your coat, bring or wear your boots and hope for the best. Right now, we are having the warmest, sunniest Nov. since ages. The weather has been nicer than it was in June.
