Traveling through airport security with my money belt.

I have a Rick Steves recommended money belt. Will I be able to have this on as I go through airport security in the US and the UK? I really prefer having it on from the moment my travels begin.
Thank you for your assistance. Donna

I did, once.
Mostly wasn't thinking and found it caused too much extra attention. Won't do it again.

I would put it on in the restroom after going through security.

My husband set off the detectors when he had Kleenex in his pocket - try and go thru security with a money belt on, they'll probably either make you remove it, or do a physical pat down...

If you have to go thru a regular old fashioned metal detector it will be fine. If you have to go thru a nude-o-scope you’ll be pulled aside.

I had mine on one time coming back in to the country thru SLC where I have to change planes. They had me step aside and the TSA agent said “You’ve probably got your money belt on, don’t you?” Yep, I did. Yep, she had to run her hand down in my pants.

Now I just make sure to stash it at the bottom of my carry on item for passage thru security.

Put your money belt in your carry on and after you go through security you can step into a rest room and put it on or wait until you are getting ready to land at your destination and slip into the airplane restroom and put it on then.

d,

If your money belt will have euros and credit cards, etc., I would fold the belt in half, wrap the strap around the pouch and then put it securely in your carry on or purse.

Depending on your carry on or purse, put it in an inside, zipped pocket. In case TSA checks your luggage and starts to pull things out, you don't want that flinging out. May be overkill, but, err on the side of caution. Then you can go to ladies room stall and put in on.

Anything like that will trigger a search. Years ago (before my knee surgery) I had a knee brace on under my jeans. This triggered a strip search as I was unable to raise the leg of my skinny jeans over my knee. So embarassing.

Depends.

On the US end: If you have TSA Pre Check and go through the simple metal detector, they won't even notice as long as you have added no metal to the contents of the money belt (that includes those heavy metal credit cards Chase likes to issue!). If you do go through the body scanner, or get picked for "additional screening" no such luck as the money belt/neck pouch/hidden pocket will appear as an item of interest and you will be asked to remove it, the TSA will open it up and look through it. A major pain.

On the UK end: Don't know how, but they always find it when you are going through security. Too many questions get asked.

Best approach: Hide the money belt in your carry on as deep as possible before reaching security. Put it back on in the first toilet after security.

Thank you all so much for your quick and helpful responses. I will keep my money belt securely in my purse and put it on after going through security.

I recently went thru TSA security at SEA and walked thru one of those scanner devices. I was pulled aside for a pat down and was surprised since I had already taken everything out of my personal. During the pat down I asked the TSA agent why I was getting a pat down since I had already walked thru the scanner and was told that it was probably since I had a pair of shorts on under my jeans
which I do when I leave Seattle in January headed for Hawaii so that I can take off my jeans before landing to be ready for the warm weather. The TSA agent said the the combination of the shorts and the jeans looked suspicious. Lesson learned. Next time I take this flight I will just ask for a pat down to begin with so that I do not have to wait in line for the scanner.

"nude-o-scope "

Love it!

Seriously, as you can see, putting the money belt on after security is the best solution.

What a lesson I learned from all of you!!
No money belt until after security or wait until I reach my airport destination!
You guys are a great help! Thanks much!

I would vote for putting it on right after security -- not a hassle wearing it on the plane and you don't need to worry every time you walk to the toilet. And there's no way you can forget it on arrival if it's strapped to your body! (Unlike my neck pillow which may still be flying trans Atlantic)

I opt for the pat-down instead of going through the peek-a-boo machine but don't have the hidden pocket or neck pouch on me. After clearing security, then I head to the bathroom for putting on the hidden pocket.

So, about 15 years ago I was on my way to Budapest to make a rather large purchase. I carried the downpayment in cash in a bag tied around my waist under my pants. I go out of the US just fine. The flight was late into Heathrow and I had little time to make the connection. I ran to the security line and a guard noticed thee lump in my pants. I explained it was a wallet. He said put it on the conveyor belt. There was a line behind me, all running late for a connection and there wasnt time to explain or argue or show much humility. So I dropped my pants, untied the thing and threw it on the belt. The line behind me cheered and applauded .... maybe because i was wearing SpongeBob boxer shorts (a gift from my children).

I follow, I think it was Fred's, recommendation. Before security take everything off your person and organize it in your carry-on. Use a bathroom if you need to. After security, use another bathroom and put your things back in your normal travel mode.

In Seattle, I usually have TSA pre-check and can go through the metal detector, and don't get stopped there. But the French, for instance, seem to use higher settings on their metal detectors. Wearing the same items (underwire bra) through metal detectors in Paris airports has triggered an alert, which leads to a pat down, which leads to either explaining or taking off the money belt. (Response varies in my experiences, the last time I just said it was "money" and they left it alone.)
