H, David. Whichever city you fly into first, it is usually logical to fly out from a different city, so you could fly into Prague and out from Budapest, to avoid a train ride back to your starting point. There is good train service between all three cities; Prague-Vienna takes about 4 hours, Vienna-Budapest about 3 hours, and Budapest-Prague 7 hours. How to Look Up Train Schedules Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it.

I would recommend to split your time pretty evenly. With four nights at each city, you have time for at least one side trip to a nearby smaller town. For each city or country, you can see some of our favorite sights listed at http://www.ricksteves.com/europe.

Hi Laura,
Thank you for your reply. That is what i have in mind to take my flight to Prague and fly back from Budapest. May i know if i include Salzbury in my trip, should i stay in Salzbury or just visit the city areas? Can i see Salzbury city in one day? I heard is a beautiful place.
Moreover, if i stay there should i take a train from Salzbury to Budapest or return to Vienna then to Budapest?

Please comment.

Thanks.

David - you are on the exact route we traveled last year! We spent two nights in Salzburg because we are 'Sound of Music' fans. We did a Sound of Music tour, a Berchesgarten tour and then just wandered Salzburg. Unless you want to do something similar, I would not spend so long in Salzburg. In fact, out of the 4 cities, Vienna, Budapest, Prague and Salzburg, the only one we would not return to is Salzburg. Our favorite was probably Budapest - don't miss the baths - we went to Szechenyi and loved it!

David you cannot see Salzburg in a day trip in my opinion. As a minimum, I would want to see the town (a few hours, then the burg, a few more hrs) and Berstagaden (Hiltler's Eagle's Nest) which is a whole day itself. We liked Salzburg much more than Vienna, but the palace and St Stephens Kirche are great Vienna sites. Prague is worth 4-5 days alone (lots of architecture and stuff to see outside of town). We are headed to Budapest this Fall so I have no insight for you. All of this is train accessible with ease. The Prague airport is pretty far from town, but you can get a public transport. Enjoy your trip!
