TravelGuard Survey on Customers' Travel Plans

I received an email from TravelGuard today, asking me to take a survey about my travel plans and attitude toward travel. I'm on their mailing list because I have a policy tied to a February 2021 tour of India that has not yet been canceled. I thought others might be interested in some of the contents of the survey, which had the common annoying characteristic of allowing only one selection from the multiple-choice options for nearly all questions. The questions covered these topics; I'm paraphrasing for brevity:

  • Travel history between Feb 1, 2019, and Feb 29, 2020.

  • Travel history since March 1, 2020.

  • Plans for Thanksgiving 2020 travel.

  • Plans for travel during the remainder of 2020.

  • How COVID-19 affected plans to cruise in 2020.

  • What situational/procedural changes would make cruising comfortable (no time frame specified)
    Vaccine availability
Existence of herd immunity (defined as 70% of population with antibodies)
    Testing prior to boarding
Temperatures taken prior to cruise, mid cruise or upon return from port visits
    Mandatory masking
Enhanced cleaning, elimination of self-serve buffets, etc.

  • What situational/procedural changes would make flying comfortable (no time frame specified)
    Vaccine availability
Existence of herd immunity (defined as 70% of population with antibodies)
    Testing prior to boarding
Temperatures taken prior to boarding and mandatory masking
    Enhanced cleaning

  • For leisure travel after geographical restrictions are lifted, what protocols would be acceptable in order to fly anywhere desired (multiple selections allowed).
Temperature screening at security / before boarding / at destination
    Mandatory masking except for infants/children
    No self-check-in kiosks
Security screening time 45 minutes longer, or more
Boarding and deplaning 15 minutes longer, or more
No upgrades even if there are empty seats in Business or First Class
    No food and beverage service
Inability to sit next to adult / child travel companions due to blocking of seats

  • Similar question with some more extreme procedures listed; multiple selections allowed.
Arrival at airport 4 hours before flight
Arrival at gate 1 hour before flight
Social distancing required at gate even for travel companions
    Personal health certificate required
    Rapid blood test before boarding
    Disinfection before boarding
Having to sit in a middle seat facing backwards with clear barrier between passengers
    Seat-back monitors not operational
    No use of overhead bins
Higher fares due to supply/demand and blocking of some seats

  • For leisure travel after geographical restrictions are lifted, what protocols would be acceptable in order to cruise before the end of 2020 [I don't know why they specified a date here, but not for flying].
    Temperature screening before boarding
Temperature screening upon docking at a destination
    Mandatory masking in public areas
    Personal health certificate required
    Blood test before boarding
    Disinfection before boarding
Virtual-only rather than in-person safety drills
Limited (if any) access to gyms
Limited (if any) access to spa/massage services
Closing of self-service buffets, ice cream machines or non-alcoholic beverage dispensers

  • "On a five point scale, how ready are you to travel again?" It wasn't possible to choose no stars.

Looks like it was designed to help the cruise industry (and the airlines that take people to/from cruises) figure out how to get the most people back at the least cost. Don't see what it has to do with insurance really.

Only in the sense that people who are not flying and cruising are unlikely to be buying travel insurance.

acraven, thanks for posting. I also received the survey this am. I too am on their mailing list. Like you, I was not impressed with the multiple-choice options, etc. I have chosen not to take their survey.

We have had very good experiences with Travel Guard paying 100% of our claims. I expected better from them than this survey which seems to be more about cruise ships than anything else. No cruising for me!

I would not have been able to take this survey, since there's no option for "no way I'm ever getting on a cruise ship".

But on the positive side -- unlike many political "surveys" I receive via email, you did not have to send a contribution before you could click "submit."
