Any advice/information how travelex chip & pin works in Europe?
This has been discussed several times within the last few weeks. You might scan back or use the search box for more detailed discussions. The cards work, of course, but the general conclusion is that you are paying a high price in fees for the small convenience that the Travelex provide. Debit cards at ATM work fine and Am credit card work fine elsewhere except for a few automated ticket or gas stations.
This is directly from the Travelex web site - # Rate of currency exchange on redemption date will be determined by Travelex without mark up or a service fee and will NOT be determined by the rate used at the time of initial Transaction.
# The rate used at redemption will NOT be the same as the rate used for your original Transaction, and the amount received upon redemption will be different from the amount of your original Transaction. If you are going to use a Travelex card - read the fine print carefully - at least twice
Right now, the Interbank rate (Oanda) is €700.90/$1000. Yesterdays rate was €702.04/$1000. If you got cash from an ATM, with a 1% fee account, you would get €695.03 for $1000. According to Travelex's own website, if you loaded the card with $1000 worth of Euro today, you would get €661.40. So you would lose about €34 ($49) using a Travelex card vs using a bank debit card. Even at a Wells Fargo bank, you'd get more, €672.90, in cash for that $1000.
