TravelEx ATMs in Amsterdam

The closet ATM to my hotel was run by TravelEx, the exchange service company. I decided not to use this ATM and found another that I believe was a local bank.

Knowing that TravelEx is an exchange bureau, I was concerned that the exchange rates at their ATMs might be less favorable than other banks.

Actually, I did not exchange Dollars -- I merely withdrew Euros from a Euros account I have in London with Citibank -- but still, I was worried that there might be a service charge from TravelEx.

Anybody had a negative experience withdrawing money from TravelEx?

Personally, I would never use anything that was associated with TravelEx. An example would be my experience in obtaining euros. A bank in Cincinnati where I used to get some euros before we went to Europe does not deal in euros anymore.. many banks are doing this.....They hire TravelEx. I found out the rate from Oanda.com and calculated what I thought the euros should cost and called them.Keep in mind that we travel a lot. I know what the rate should be. The man quoted me some absurd quote like 2.00 to the euro. At that time it should have been $1.45. Whee. Travel Ex used to have AAA money cards and they were a rip off, also. AAA has some other vender now. Be careful because Travel Ex owns many thing related to money cards, ATM's etc. They charge way too much!!

I agree, I just don't trust TravelEx. I found another bank and there was no service charge at all to withdraw Euros.

Travelex isn't a bank or ATM. It's an automated exchange booth. I won't use them unless it's an emergency because they are much more expensive than an actual ATM.

"Travelex isn't a bank or ATM. It's an automated exchange booth."

You may be right, but their ATMs accept bank cards, and if you put in your card, it gives you Euros back -- but, I presume, at TravelEx's own exchange rate, rather than the cheaper rate that the VISA network gives you at legitimate banks.

I wondered what would happen if if put in my European bank card. Would it just give me the money from my Euros account, or would it charge me a fee, or what? (I used regular ATMs in both Paris and Amsterdam, and there were no fees charged.)

I decided not to risk it to find out!

Even if it gave you the euros from your euro account it would likely charge you a hefty ATM usage fee.
