My fiance is a cancer survivor and has an interal feeding tube. At least four times a day he must take a canned formula through his tube. he cannot take anything by mouth. We would like to think about going to Europe on our honeymoon, and my queston is would we be allowed to take the unopened sealed cans of formula through security? For a long flight he would need to do this at least once. I assume the airline will need to be consulted or informed. Otherwise we can ship his supplies to our hotel. What other secuity issues should we be aware of?
I dont' have personal experience with this, but I do know that according to TSA's website (tsa.gov) it does make exceptions to the 3oz rule by stating: " larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. these items for inspection at the checkpoint. Officers may need to open these items to conduct additional screening." I would think if you had a few containers with you going through the screening point maybe with a letter from the MD stating they are medically necessary, it should be fine. You can always call the airport/airline ahead of time to check as well. Hope that helps!
Thanks! Now I know it's at least possible!
I'm sure it's possible, but I'd suggest discussing logistics with someone who has experience with this... perhaps the cancer society, an oncology nurse, or a support group would be a good source of information. You wouldn't want shipped supplies to get caught up in customs hassles. People who have dealt with this could probably help define the documentation that would smoothly get it through TSA or customs. And have a wonderful honeymoon!
