If you are an American who traveled abroad during that time period, chances are that you are a plaintiff in the class action lawsuit on credit card fees charged unlawfully during that time period. There is a settlement that has been approved by the federal court in the case, which will result in compensation for those affected. You can choose one of three settlement options--a $25 compensatory check, or you can get an estimated compensation if you know about how many days you spent out of the US during that period, or you can add up all the money you actually spent on your credit cards abroad during that time period and get a pro-rated share of the fees refunded. The deadline for filing a request for compensation is the end of this month!! You can file online. For more info, see www.ccfsettlement.com
Funny this showed up today. I just found the newspaper clipping and letter I received. I hope I can come up with something before the end of the month or I may just take the $25.00. It's better than nothing and I think we usually pay in cash unless we need a large amount of money at one time.
Thanks for the warning.
You might be better off if you can estimate how many days you were abroad during that ten year period. You will have to also indicate whether you were usually traveling for work, vacation, or visiting family and friends. But you don't have to detail where you went, exactly wehn, or what you spent.
I think if you spent more than a week out of the US you are better off to pick option 2 or 3.
Wow! I have been living in Canada since '99 and used my American credit card until I ran out of cash on it (it was tied my bank account) for a good 4 years... I was always hit with those darn fee's. I can't even imagine how much that would be...!
Note: This was a big topic here a few months ago when it first came up and there must be a hundred posts, and you can find these using the search box in the upper right corner.
I am glad JER re-posted it though. I owe them a beer someday!
Not everyone uses that box that Kent speaks of. This was the first I had heard of this. It won't apply to me here in Canada but I still found it interesting.
I thought I would post about it in a new post because the deadline is so close that folks who heard about it earlier and meant to file might have had it slip their minds. And it is really worth doing if you spent any time at all abroad. We got almost four hundred dollars back!
I travelled quite a lot between that time! Good to know.
Someone already got money back? We filed shorly after it was announced and we haven't heard a thing. I wonder what's up with that.
We haven't received our "economic stimuls" in our bank account yet, either, and we were due for it last week.
I haven't checked recently, but maybe we don't exist anymore. Gotta go and check the obits...
No, Sue, we haven't actually got our check yet. But, since we filed based on our actual expenses, we know we will be receiving a check in that amount. My understanding from the website is that checks will go out once approved after the class of claimants is finalized, which is quite soon now.
Oh and we haven't gotten our stimulus check either. So you probably still exist :-)
Off-topic, but there is a chart on the IRS website (www.irs.gov) that should tell you exactly when to expect your money. It goes by the last two digits of SSN of the first person on the return. If you got your tax refund via direct deposit, you will get that money the same way. If you owed, or got yours by check, you'll get a check -- there is a separate schedule for that. And some other issues may cause you to get it by check even though you were supposed to get it by direct deposit.
I've filed about ten claims for various class action suits over the years, including this CC case. I've yet to see a single penny:( I'm not expecting better results this time around either.
Nancy, the settlement this thread is referring to is in regards to overseas credit card use. The refund you mentioned is not related to this (but important, nonetheless!). :-)
